I am finding that I get a lot of direct sun in my eyes through this gap - I do a fair bit of my driving in the mornings and evenings, when the sun is low. I'd really like to have something to block the direct sun coming through. (My visor does not have any extensions that slide out.)

    IMG_1623.jpg

Here is what I'm considering, and result of one attempt:

PlastiDip - Paint it on to cover that part of the windshield. Tried it, didn't work.
Tint - Don't know if a tint job can go over those dots.
Different Visor - Aftermarket (what I've seen so far looks pretty crappy), or troll thru some junk yards.

Anyone got a decent product or DIY fix you've used for this?

My old honda civic I had a window tint strip applied to the top of the front window that worked great at blocking that area.

Get a cool sticker to cover the area. But in seriousness just get some tint across the top.

Does the 3rd gen not have the extendable visor that my 2nd gen has? It’s a plastic piece that retracts into the visor, but will extend behind the mirror.

Eyebrow. Always. In every vehicle, it will save your eyes. Yes, a good shop can do a quality tint over the dots. Get a good ceramic tint (high heat rejection) there and you will love it. It will take some getting used to having something there but even if you get 5-20% (I wouldn’t go any lighter) you’ll still be able to see through it at traffic lights as needed and it will almost negate the need to use a sun visor!

    Mine does not.

And +10 hp, right? I really don't like the look of a tint strip across the windshield, but the sticker idea made me think of another idea: I could try electrical tape to cover just that area.

You could probably get a tint shop to extend that black dot pattern with some clean lines/tint to capture the gap and just cut it up at an angle so it looks “factory”.

Eventually I'll be getting the windows tinted - I'll ask for this as well.

The whole visor extends on the rod. The black clip in your photo is the thumb grip when grabbing the outside of the visor, and the arrows show the direction it slides. Unclip the visor, pull it out slightly fold it back up a bit more and extend it all the way out just above the rear view. It’ll block the sun coming in from that gap.

Don’t do that. Electrical tape gets sticky and weird in the sun and heat. It’ll travel and slide around.

Get some vinyl from a local shop and make a custom block pattern that is bespoke to your dreams.

+1 about electrical tape. It is nasty-sticky for a reason ... wrap onto and stay on electrical junctions. I only use it to cover things that I do not care if they get messed-up.

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
This. The visor does what you want, you just have to be smart enough to use it.

Yeah, I get that. Works pretty well when it's rotated to the side window.
No, it doesn't. I suppose it's hard to tell from the pic, but that visor is rotated as far toward the windshield as it goes, and the rear view mirror blocks it from sliding to the right.

I'll look for some custom vinyl pieces somewhere that I can cut myself.

1st Gen Tacomas also had an extendable plastic shade that comes out of the visor. I was not happy that they dropped them on the 3rd gens.

Don't forget your mirror mount has two points of articulation where you can raise it toward the roof so the visor can extend to the right.
