If you didn’t walk out of the dealer or buy it directly from an online Toyota dealership there’s guarantee it’s OE. IMO if it’s off Amazon, EBay etc it’s more than likely fake.

So, yes, it looks like a fake, but not for all the reasons that have been stated.

    1. 04152-YZZA1 is a Toyota USA part number. They are made by Denso in a factory in Thailand, but they are sourced through Toyota USA, so have different packaging than other regions. Occasionally the packaging of the same part number may change, but this doesn’t look correct.

    2. The broken English is not a reason for it to be fake, in fact that is the exact wording on Toyota Japan filter boxes.

    3. The letter spacing does seem wrong for a Toyota Japan filter however.

    4. The application list is incorrect. The 3GR/4GR use the 04152-31080(-79)/YZZA3, not the YZZA1. This packaging is a knockoff of the 04152-31080 with the part number changed to 04152-YZZA1, but without the correct engines listed. 04152-31090(-79) is the correct Toyota Japan part number, which lists the application list as “2GR-FE - AR” on most recent packaging.

    5. The colour of the filter paper varies depending on the factory and production date, and is not a very good way to tell if it’s genuine or not.

    6. Toyota, and their group companies (like Denso and Aisin), do have factories in Thailand. It’s where most Hiluxes are built. Denso Japan does supply a lot of the OE canister filters, but Thailand supplies most service canisters, and most OE and service cartridge filters.

Here’s my two bits, never ever buy critical parts (oil filters) on line from eBay or Amazon as stated by others, never buy in bulk, buy a month before you need it. Walmart or the Dealer, yes an on line dealer can pass off counterfeit parts to pad their bottom line. I change the oil and filter every 6 months, regardless of the mileage.
Here’s a quote from someone I have used many times when I was working. “The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price has faded”

Good news is I was able to return all these filters for a full refund. He even paid for return shipping.
Lesson learned. Trying to pass off counterfeit as genuine on a critical part is slimey. Worse is when I questioned ebay they said they were real.
Watch the YouTube video above on comparison of oil filters and Toyota were poor at trapping contamination. So there's another thing to consider.
