Dave is just grumpy, he means well though
The search function here does suck, and sometimes this stuff is discussed tangentially in other threads, so it’s hard to find. Eventually I will crack my spare headlights open and hopefully see what the options might be. There is a plug on the bottom of them, so it would be nice if they could just be rewired internally. That being said, there are two footnotes: 1) I can’t find a matching plug for that one, so it might be a de-pinning type of deal. 2) The amber is most likely overdriven. No real way to know this until I can get a meter in the board and maybe find the specs for the LED itself. But I am willing to bet blindly that they are overdriven to get the brightness out of them. Is what I mean by overdriven is that an amber LED might have a forward operating voltage of 3V. Getting to 3V can be done a couple ways, but that is the LEDs happy spot so to speak. In order to get more light out of them, they are sometimes driven at say 6V or so. This makes them brighter, but causes heat and degradation in the diode itself. So it shortens its life. It’s not a bad thing with a 50% duty cycle, and only intermittent use like a turn signal as it gives it time to cool down, helping that. But in a DRL application, it could burn the LEDs out pretty far. Just something to think about.

I read in one of these threads about stone age option 3: crack open the OEM LED’s and put a transparent amber wrap over the DRL/turn area.

Lacking motivation to do this at the moment, I just disabled them all together. Hmmph.
