Hello everyone, I just wanted to make a post to see what anyone had done to fix their rusty frames.

I am in need of a new gas tank crossmember and are wondering if anyone has done any DIY methods that worked instead of buying one for $249.99 plus shipping. Wondering if I should just weld/bolt a 2x2 across and use bushings on top to support the bed if needed.

Any advice and pictures would be appreciated!

Honestly all of that looks terrible. What's the front of the frame look like?
I guess you could weld patch panels on...it there's anything left to weld to.
That would very much be a band aid fix.
    And frames are nonexistent now....

I have the safe-t-caps to patch everything on the rear. The front of the frame is solid as can be it’s just the rear that needs attention. I’m just in need of a most cost effective solution for the cross member

a peice of 2x3 seems like the right side. honestly it doesnt look terrible if those holes are all the rust. If i was you any metal that boxes in the C of the frame should get cut out and re worked. Those bracekts that box the frame trap mud and cause rust like right on top of the bump stop pad. I would cut those out and get strips of 1" bar to box the frame and spread them out so they don't hold anything in. You can tell that's why your driver rear shock mount is rusted and on top of the bumpstop pad.

I recently bought the rust buster brand crossmember. Not the cheap option but it got very well.

only down side is it doesn’t have the mounting holes for the evap parts

yeah this a picture from the summer when I just pulled the bed off. I have the truck in the garage now with the bed off and pretty much every out of the way. I’ve cut out those support pieces you are referencing which made me find a lot more weaker metal but it’s all cut out. Honestly wish I left some of it because it seems really weak rn. I have the safe-t-caps I’m just looking for an alternative for the crossmember.
