3rz valve shims

    Hey Guys,

    This is my first time posting on Tacoma World. I have 2-1st Gen Tacos and a 3rd Gen. One of the 1st Gen Tacos is my Son's. long story short... We were out wheeling one day and he over rev'd it and bent a valve. We have been rebuilding the motor and setting it up for a turbo, cause why not if you have to rebuild it anyway, right? We have forged internals, low compression pistons, bigger and coated valves, Dual HD valve springs, stage 1 cams, and of course a Turbo. We ordered all the parts form LCE so I'm sure the quality is good, but here's my problem, I had a local machine shop, which has a good reputation, grind for the bigger valves and assemble the head. Everything looks great but when installed the new cams and checked the valve clearance I found that I have way to much gap! I have the biggest shim you can buy, .330, and I'm still .483 to .508 gap on the exhaust side and .305 on the intake side. Has anyone ever ran into this problem? Do the buckets wear out? Could the valves Possibly not be ground in far enough? I assume after we run the engine the valves will tighten up a bit but that big of a gap with the biggest shim installed doesn't seem right to me.

    Just FYI, This is my first engine build.
