I prefer the 1/4 DRL over the rectangles, but love the output of the OEM LEDs. Any LED bulbs out there that can match? maybe HIDs?

No, bulbs in housings will never do what you are wanting.

You can do it if you want to. It's not a "mess" in my opinion. For optimal output, H9s instead of H11s will be your best choice. The projector lens honestly does a very decent job of keeping the low beams from blinding oncoming traffic when using LED replacements. The reason for going LED over H9s is aesthetics, though. The H9s will be brighter.

BTW--HIDs absolutely will exceed OEM LED outputs. See the page linked above. But the downside is possible blinding of oncoming traffic from the "uplight" designed for lower output bulbs. Also, many people report a bouncing effect where something seems to be loose in the aftermarket HID mount (don't know--just read about it)

HID will be more brighter than LED for sure OP. HID will require a ballast though so keep that in mind.

They linked a second gen comparison which uses a halogen reflector housing. Yeah the third gen has a halogen projector but placing an LED bulb in there is a terrible idea if the end goal is improved lighting. Like others have said, the H9 solution is better. Or buy OEM LEDs
