So, I was having dinner with a friend the other night. He asked if insurance for your 4x4 is a "thing" while off-roading. I never even thought about it - I just assumed "no" - if you leave the pavement, you're on your own.

A quick google confirmed you can buy insurance for "off road vehicles" ie. side by sides, dirt bikes, home made things, I suppose for liability on roads?

I suppose you could buy insurance for anything, but are we covered under basic ICBC coverage? Can you buy additional coverage for FSR's, rock crawling, off-roading?

That is a terrific question I would like to know too.

    But I’m assuming NO.

You would think mainline FSR’s would be covered as most camp grounds are only accessible by FSR’s or on pavement.
Loggers and the support vehicles for them I would assume are on a different insurance liability.

This is all speculation as why else’s would the BC government mandate us to have plates when off-roading?

But this is ICBC we are talking about the fking insurance monopoly, you bet your ass they will find every loophole, or exception no matter how vuage to not pay you, and hole you the bill in your face.

    Drive safe

Call your agent and ask them run down the terms for you.

Every policy is different, as is every local regulation.

But as a general rule, parts broken as a direct result from off-roading, racing, or sport use are usually considered wear and tear.

Body, frame, and incidental damage (not caused by hooning) might be covered. Again, it's worth the phone call to understand your policy well before you need it.

If you are on an official dirt road, ICBC covers you. If you are on a "trail" you're on your own. Typically if you are on an official fsr and get into an accident, the fault is 50/50 regardless of actual fault, at least as far as I know.

That's how I understand it, and I know a few people who have had accidents on dirt roads

If it's a forest service road and maintained...insurance will cover.

For example this is good to go:

    Nope...

I asked my agent here in Victoria, they said yes covered on logging roads, off-road, "comprehensive, we cover you for everything, roll down a hill, drive in a lake". But nothing in writing so I am still skeptical. Dealt with ICBC before and they are just as slippery as you expect insurance companies to be. Loopholes are insurance company specialties.

Thanks for the update and confirmation of what I've "heard" as well. I'm just hoping I/we never have to find out.
