is Tacoma's V6 weak?

Not a big deal for stick buyers since the redline in those is like 800rpm down on the autos. Lol

But also, you get used to it. My 135 on stock turbos choked above 6k, so you just learn to shift at 6 and not run it all the way out to 7. With the way those motors make torque, it doesn’t really matter.

The problem with the Tacoma is that it doesn’t come on cam until around 4,000rpm. And with the ratios on this thing, even when I run mine all the way to redline before shifting, the motor slows down so much during the shift that it’s not on cam anymore after. It’s almost like driving a car with too big a turbo.

 

I tend to wind out my manual trans Taco anyways, and my AT short shifts. So don’t see it as huge deal with the MT 4G.

Drive slow anyways and avoid the interstate at all cost. Most of my travels are on bi-ways, speed limit tops out at 65, though when I do drive the interstate my 3G has no problem cruising at 80.

4G specs look great. All generations are a slight improvement over the last, have owned them since the 80s, loved all my Toyota trucks, not sure why the hate in between the generations. Guess it is like a family fighting with one another over petty bullshit. Lol!

Lol! I figured it was autocorrect, which is supposed to make us look smarter…I have my doubts though! Lol! Some of the autocorrect words it uses has me scratching my head.

While I am perfectly content with my 3G, always thought these sized trucks would be great with 300HP/300TQ…which Toyota got it in the ballpark with the 4G. Little bummed they axed the AC, at least they could have tossed a manual in the XC, but oh well…it is what it is.

Being a Toyota geek, personally would love to have one of each generation sitting my garage. There is a guy in England that has with HiLuxes. Would be great to jump back and forth between them and feel all the little improvements over time.

With the previous comment said, I do wish this truck had some more low end torque, though.

My previous truck was a 1999 Mountaineer with the pushrod 302 and that thing was about the same weight and speed as my Tacoma, but it was a bit down on power comparatively. But it felt significantly better to drive around town because it made a decent amount of torque down low.

And with that being said, I knew this going into the purchase, and it was a big part of why I got a stick, too. I just shift it like a 4500 pound Miata and have a good time.

It’s a truck, not a sports car. And 8 seconds to 60 is completely fine.

It’s like my phone doesn’t know me at all with the words it picks. But yeah, I’m right with you on that power figure, a lightly boosted Inline 6 would be fantastic in this application.

 

Have been driving Toyotas over 30 years, so used to lack of bottom end, probably why I have no issue with it. That said I could see why some people want it, especially coming from other platforms. Since the 2/3G is about the size of the 1st Gen Tundra, baffled why Toyota never put the 4.7 V8 in the Taco, yet the 4Runner got it. That would have been a great engine for the Tacoma, now with the 4G, which is even closer to the size of 1G Tundy, they finally got the power numbers very similar, plus getting much better mpgs than those old V8s. Going to say that is a win. Of course Toyota threw in some quirks in the 4G to keep us complaining… lol! No matter what they do, can’t make everyone happy.

 

Right!? I’ll occasionally go back and proof read my posts…and just shake my head, those are not the words I wanted to use! Lol! Typically only half paying attention anyways and toss words on the screen haphazardly.

Turbo inline six wouldn’t have been bad, don’t mind they went with a four, since the old trucks had 4 cylinders, it is a touch on nostalgia for me.

 

Well… record sales of 3rd gens. Toyota must be doing something right.

 

It's not like this was a long technical thread to pour over. I owned a 3rd gen for nearly 5yrs, the powertrain was a dog, and it will be remembered as a dog by everyone who drove one.

It certainly is a pissing match over who buys what trim and whatnot, guess if it helps you to sleep at night. Wealthiest guy I know drives a 20+ year old Camry, doesn’t need to prove his socioeconomic status to anyone…

 

It is a truck…don’t really see the point of trying to go fast with it. Want to win the stoplight to stoplight races buy a sports car.

 

No, over there it's 95% 3rd gen owners getting their copium fix by hating on the new truck. Some of them are in this very thread trying to defend the 3rd gen's gutless powertrain

 

My main issues with the 4G was them killing the AC, that and price might as well get a Tundra at that point. Styling is growing on me, hated the 3G when it first came out too…still think the grill is too big even though I own one.

Do think the chassis and drivetrain is a great improvement, which I have stated many times. Have suggested for years the rear suspension should be linked like the 4Runner/Land Cruiser and was chastised for it…and now they finally did it.

Hey and thanks for bringing the 4G discussion down here, since I am not allowed up there anymore. Maybe if I run out and buy one, they’ll let me back in??? Lol!
