“As soon as I turned the key to start, sound of metal being hit. I turned off the truck and turned it back on and no sound of metal. Drove great. Then today, turned on car and as soon as I drove down the hill those two icons came on.”

I got a message from a family member. What would cause a metal to metal contact sound while starting the engine, and cause P0430 to show up on the scan gauge?

I don’t have any other info other than they went underneath and found the cats not messed with.

I don’t claim to be an expert on this subject.
    But I’m going to assume,

One of the oxygen sensors has failed. or a part of it came loose and fell in/out into the cat inside, thus the one time noise

A more expensive issue is a catalytic converter has failed.

Also I don’t understand what you mean by “they went underneath” did they just put it on a hoist and visually inspect?
I would have hit the cat a few times with a mallet to hear if something is loose, removed the sensors mabey? Dunno something hands on. Unless they have X-ray or Gamma vision.

They crawled underneath thinking someone had attempted to steal the cats.

They’re just stumped because of the metal to metal contact they heard upon turning the ignition on that morning.

They’ll be taking in to get it checked, thank you.

Could be two different issues, noise could be the starter/bendix failing, the code, the O2 sensor or cat failing.

I’ll pass that info on. Thank you.
