TFL just broke their new Tacoma

Agree. What happened shouldn't have happened, but I'd hardly use a single data point as an identifier of a bigger issue. I'll be keeping a close eye on reports coming out about similar problems other owners have... if a trend starts to form I'll be asking for my deposit back.

 

The Colorado is holding up while putting out 420lbs of torque while the Tacoma coming undone at 317lbs torque. I guess some upgrades are in order for the TRD team.

 

Something that gets me is it is just a normal short bed TRD OR.

What happens when you have a loaded down long bed Trailhunter putting out 465 ft lbs of torque? Maybe it has upgrade driveline parts? I kinda doubt they’d have two different front ends between iForce and Max models.

 

Funny, I've had three Pentastar 3.6 engines. Two in Dodges and one in a Jeep and I've never had a problem. It's the best engine I've had in 53 years of car ownership. In the Dodges I also had several 5.7 and I finally opted for the 3.6 because it's such a good engine. It was even voted one of the top five engines in the World a few times in it's early years. Look at the simplicity and efficiency of it. Other engines have lines, wires, hoses going all over them like a bowl of spaghetti. Other engines use start/stop, cylinder deactivation, direct injection, turbos, any number of band aids to try to be efficient and competitive and the Pentasar is a simple and clean looking engine with none of that in my applications. Doesn't even have an EGR valve. Yet gets 30 mpg highway and has 303 hp. The very early builds had a left head problem. Fixed right away. The only other problem that causes an oil leak is due to the ASE certified monkeys and shadetree mechanics who don't have any common sense. The oil filter is in a plastic neck on top of the engine. The cap has an "O" ring. The "O" ring creates the seal to prevent leaks but clueless people torque on that cap and that plastic part extends down below the lower intake manifold and also houses oil and coolant sensors. When they torque on the cap it causes the mounting points down below to crack and create a leak. So that engine actually has no problems of it's own and is the best engineered engine I've ever seen in the 4 or 6 cyl categories. I look at every truck made today and I have a very difficult time letting go of my 3.6. If Chrysler, Daimler, Cerebus, FCA, Stellantis, whomever owns that company this week, would have come out with a new Dakota as was promised five years ago with a 3.6 and the current 8 speed, I'd have one of those. That would have been a home run. The fact that someone's girlfriend had a problem with that engine doesn't really inspire me to believe it was the engines fault.

 

The hybrids get beefed up CV joints and axels. They have the Tundra's rear diff. At least that is what was said in Hawaii. The hybrids being the Pro and Trailhunter.

 

I am glad TFL Cringe did their cringiest. There does exist a world where they are what they are and a Taco breaks. They are not necessarily mutually exclusive.

This should be a good thing as they get the eyeballs and Toyota will pay attention. Much more than some rando on an internet forum pile-on driving about Toyota fanbois. The sooner Toyota gets to figure out what happened the better. I am first in line at my dealer for a Trailhunter. Get this sorted out now.

But nooo. These guys already indicated they are going to squeeze more blood out of this turnip. Going to "examine" it themselves and release more videos for the views. Get on the phone to Sheldon and get it to Toyota.

 

I wouldn't be surprised if Toyota has a rep peering over their shoulder when they throw it on a lift.

We were concerned that the initial Tacoma unit might encounter issues, similar to those seen in the gen 3, gen 2 with corrosion, and the Tundra. Given the radically new design, there is a higher likelihood of errors. Now, we anticipate that Toyota will leverage its expertise to identify the root cause, make improvements, and potentially issue a recall to address any issues. It may take some time, possibly months or even years, but I´m confident that Toyota will ensure that the Tacoma becomes as reliable as the indestructible Hilux of Top Gear.

 

Keep dreaming. What is Toyota doing about the Tundra engine failures?

 

My truck last spring, about 50yds up the same trail from where the TFL video takes place. I've also driven my wife's base-trim Forester through here. Much abuse.

 

Isn't the Hybrid also coming to the OR trims as well? Maybe that will be how they lock it into a higher up package???

 

I think Limited, Off Road, and Sport will offer the Hybrid upgrade, it will probably be on top of a Premium Package.

 

Is it still parked in that same spot broken from all the abuse you put it through?

 

If there is a design problem or build problem, I'm totally okay with it so long as Toyota takes care of the customers impacted and addresses it long term. There are a lot of new parts that need to be tested on this platform, and hopefully Toyota is watching/listening.

I do get a kick out of all the Toyota apologists dreaming up the most wild theories of what happened. They'll be the first to lambaste any other brand under identical circumstances, will but pull the most ridiculous crap out of their rear end in defense of Toyota. Too funny.

It's a mechanical machine, folks. Stuff breaks. Learn from it. There's a reason Toyota pushes continuous improvement so hard in their factories, and it's not because they're perfect.

Guy I know had a Jeep on 35s with pentastar for about 4-5 years. Wheeled that thing hard in all sorts of conditions.

He had zero issues.

I sold my last 3rg gen to get something with more interior space and waited to see what this 4th gen was like. Now that I see it with more space in front but still a cramped rear and an SR5 landing in the mid $40k range, I'm over it. I'm probably moving on to either a used GX460 or 2nd gen Tundra Crewmax. Perhaps a used F150 XLT but I'm still leaning Toyota/Lexus. All of these can be had for $35k or less with under 50,000 miles. Seems like a MUCH better value. Now, which one to choose?! These suggestions of a Jeep? Man, I find that tough to swallow. They've never been known for any level of reliability.
