Exactly, I'm dumbfounded. Apparently it has been checked by 2 Toyota master technicians..they say all things have been checked at this point.....I have not had a single thing go wrong with this truck before hand

I bought it at 50k miles with a CPO warranty so maybe there is hope. But I'm incredibly dissapointed

Thats better. Make sure read the warranty for coverage and make sure they give you what exactly failed.

I feel for you OP. Hope it works out for you. I hope you didn't hit what I call the un lottery. We don't know how the engine was operated or maintained the first 50,000 correct.

You need someone better at diagnosing problems to be working on your truck than who currently is.

I’m having trouble understanding how the truck passed a compression test and a leak down test but needs a whole new engine

Hi folks thanks for all the help you provided. I asked the dealership to send me the mechanic notes and here is what they found. Scoring on the inside of cylinders, they said it needs a new engine for sure BUT after speaking with Toyota, Toyota wants a precise point of failure for the engine which the dealership said would take up to 14 hours of labor at a little under 3k for labor. If the point of failure is found then they send pictures to Toyota and MAYBE they will cover it (engine) and cover the 14 hours of labor. If there's any insight please let me know. They are waiting for my authorization, this feels like playing roulette with 5k which I'm not in the position to do. Any advice or should I just tap out of this car? Thanks allIMG_3786.jpg

I would take it somewhere for a second opinion before giving them any more money. Definitely before ripping the engine out.

Based on your description of their diagnosis, they're just shotgunning stuff. They might have landed at new engine simply because that's easier for them than finding out exactly what's wrong.

To them, you are a captive customer, since you dropped the truck off with them and can't easily take it away at this time. Not saying they are trying to fleece you, but it would be all too easy to do so.

They told you a couple days ago that compression was good and leak down test was good , but tech wrote on the back of the RO that compression was low on cyl 2 , did they change their story

I think there was a miscommunication between the service rep and the tech notes which is why I asked her for them. seems like the cylinder did not pass compression after all

Certainly not feeling confident in this service dept . A second opinion may be in your best interest

Ask them to give you some ideas what causes the scoring? Remember, if the failure happened outside of the "engine" and cause the engine damage, it won't be covered.
Blown oil cooler won't covered damages to the engine. If something broke inside the intake and got sucked in to the cylinder, won't be covered.
Hard to advise. Probably do the math to see if you are willing to gamble with the warranty

Ah that really sucks. Don't envy your current position. Hard to know when to cut your losses in these situations. Used engine may be your best bet moving forward? Hope it works out in your favor in the end.

Thanks all, just spoke to Toyota Corporate. Corporate can't promise me anything but they are higher in command than the rep the dealership has been speaking to. Called since this position of playing maybe with 3 thousand dollars seems like BS. They are calling the dealership to see if anything can be done. I did get clarity that I have the 7year/100,000 powertrain warranty, fingers crossed it applies and corporate can cover the lab that needs to be done to find the point of failure.
