I’d like to replace my steering wheel to something with factory stereo/volume controls, but I’d like to retain the function as l air bag, and look/fit like a factory part.

    my Tacoma is a ‘95.

anyone know what the first years were with steering wheel controls?

or any suggestions for aftermarket controls? All I am finding are aftermarket that strap on to the steering wheel…

I am planning on upgrading the stereo, and many stereos have steering wheel control compatibility…

    thanks

First gen are just that, very basic. No first gen has that upgraded option.

IMG_3797.jpg I use the steering wheel from a 08 Corolla S. Looks great. Feels OEM.

Are you sure they are comparable?

In 2004 Tacoma ribbon cables changed from a 5 conductor to 4 conductors.

As long as the number of wires are the same, you should be able to retain the function of the horn and cruise control.

My early '95 build doesn't even have the plug and play capability for intermittent wipers.

I think you're expecting a lot from a basic, thirty year old vehicle.

My early '95 has intermittant wipers...

I know its a basic 30-year old vehicle... Thats why I was asking if anyone knew of a compatible steering wheel/air bag that might also have the steering wheel audio controls... I want to upgrade...

Something I could look for at the local Toyota dismantlers...

    Thanks...

Not sure if it's compatible w/ your year but a wheel from a 2000ish Sienna fits and has steering wheel controls. Pretty sure that was the only Toyota available at the time that had steering wheel controls. Airbag is the single plug type. You'll need the clockspring from the Sienna too since the Tacoma one doesn't have enough connections on it. Also, I don't have cruise control so that might be another thing to sort out if you do. It's not exactly plug and play but the wiring is pretty simple.

Steering wheel controls can also be made to work with the 3 spoke wheel shown above. The controls have to come from a Lexus of the same vintage (from the GS I think) but that's unfamiliar territory for me since I went the Sienna route. My guess is you'd need the clockspring from the Lexus in order to work too.

Last thing - the controls plug into the CD changer port on the back of the factory radio so if you have an aftermarket radio, you'll have to get something like THIS. Again, this is unfamiliar territory since I have the factory radio.

Great info, just what I was looking for...

My Cruise control doesn't work, so that's not an issue... I have an aftermarket stereo (and looking for a new one), so I have already been looking at those adapers...

Just looking for a way to cleanly add the buttons to the steering wheel...

Might be best to just go aftermarket, but thought I'd see if anyone had adapted a OEM wheel.

    Thanks
