Is this normal ?

I was getting something from my bed and noticed what appears to be glue or silicone coming out of the plastic part of my tailgate. Is this normal ? What silicone or glue can I get to glue it back on if I need to? Thanks!

 

Did someone/ business put your tonneau cover on for you? Wonder if they did that after doing something to it. Mine doesn't have that stuff.

Same… not sure what that is. It does look like some sort of dried up adhesive, but it’s hard to tell.

 

I bought the tonneau cover from extremeterrain.com and I installed it my self. The part where that goo or glue or whatever it is is coming from the tailgate.

Not normal.

The tailgate plastic comes off quite easily, pop it off and have a look.

 

Never seen anything like this. I believe that piece snaps in at the top when assembled at the factory, so the adhesive is likely from a botched repair job.

 

Thanks I’ll have to look into taking it apart on the weekend.

 

If you bought the truck new I'd contact the dealer before you touch anything. If that's not just flexible silicone you could be looking at paint damage.

 

I’ll get in contact with the car dealer and ask them what the problem is.

 

I wonder if it's cosmoline wax? Some German cars are sprayed heavily with cosmoline wax before being shipped over on a boat to prevent rust. (mini Cooper)

There is no adhesive under the bed trim from the factory. Someome else put that gunk there...

Your trim seems tweaked. It is not sitting flush with the body. On tje corners too. Something is off there...


It appears someone may have tried to hide that by gluing it? (It wont work! - there is no flat contact on that piece.)

 

I messaged Toyota and the dealer where I purchased the truck from so now I’m waiting to see what their solution is! Thanks for the input and advice !

I agree. Very suspicious that it is present at mirror opposite ends of tailgate. Maybe someone dropped something heavy at some point and damaged the original plastic, and the piece that is there now is not the original?

 

I just talked to the person that undercoated my truck with waxoyl and asked him if he thinks that yellow stuff is waxoyl and he said it can possibly be waxoyl and if it is that would be a first for him but hard to tell! So I’m gonna bring it by the shop to see first before hounding Toyota even though I already did! Ooopppss!
