It would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling Tacoma kids and your 4.0's/ 3.5's lol

 

A 2.4L is what started it all. Way back in the pickup. Before it was a Tacoma.
So we can give it a pass.

The engines are nothing alike, but it's a 2.4.
Time will tell if it can live up to the old 22r

 

It fixes 90% of what 3rd gen owners bitch about so it can’t be that bad.

 

Put a 3rd Gen owner in a 4th Gen. They still won't be satisfied

Live up to a 22R? Are you talking about the valve rattle that you could adjust by tightening or loosening the valve cover nuts or the timing chain wearing a hole in the timing cover? It was an engine that worked, but not a particularly good one. The only good thing about them was that I could reset the cam timing after it jumped without pulling more than the valve cover....lol.

Yes...it was simple to work on, but wasn't a stellar engine by any stretch of the imagination....better than maybe most other 4 bangers of the same vintage that used timing belts, but compared to anything since then, it was a POS.

 

My first Tacoma was a 2.4. About as bulletproof as an engine can be and easy to work on. After 275k miles, the outside of that engine was dry as sand.

Driving from San Diego to Lone Pine, I got 36mpg once, but usually would get 28 to 31.
