Any comments on the 2024 taco engine

So long as the Toyota logo on the engine isn’t covering up a ford logo, we might be ok.

 

Building long lasting cars is no longer profitable nor the goal of auto makers, Toyota included.

 

Expensive to fix and mod and they have their quirks, but my gawd the BMW line can make some stupid power with minimal work.

 

I dunno, 91 lb feet of torque might be pretty dismal in a truck. My 3RZ puts out 177ish….

 

I think they are about 700ish...cant buy them individual,they come in a set of 4 with Feed pipe and gaskets..
but right now they are on National backorder..so are Headgaskets..

 

Yeah the torque is where it shines IMO. Gearing helps too. I'm not kidding when I say I can chirp the tires easier in the 2.7 then my old 3.5.

It’s way more peppy and it’s paired to a nice transmission, I need more seat time but I’m happy with the changes.

I was initially happy with 3.5 but then highway driving in the auto showed how mismatched it was.

Also thinks the 4cyl is a V4 lol.

 

Yeah the costs of parts on modern turbo DI motors has come down significantly.

I’m not scared of it, but I will give people advice. As someone with 150k on their turbo DI motor with 100k of that tuned to make 1/3 more power and torque…Having mechanical sympathy when the engine is cold is the key to making them last.

Start the motor and let it come back down to idle before setting off, that gives oil time to circulate everywhere. Then, no fast or hard throttle until the oil is warm. Keep it below 2000 or 2500rpm. If you’re reading water temp (idk what the gauge is on the 4th gen), keep it gentle for a few minutes after the water is fully up to temp because oil temp tends to rise slower than water.

The temperature set points on modern engines are pretty high, commonly up to 250F oil temp and 220F water temp. That’s for both volumetric efficiency gains and a cleaner fuel burn.

But the consequence of that efficient design is that you need to keep you foot out of the throttle until the motor warms up. If you don’t, it leads to premature wear.

Don’t forget, a turbocharger can spin at well over 100,000rpm. It needs warm oil to do that without prematurely wearing out.

 

Haven't driven it yet, but based on the low-end torque numbers it's probably more pleasant to daily drive. All the reviews are saying as much. Low end torque is your friend. As far as longevity goes, who knows. It's too early to tell. Plenty of Ford ecoboosts are on the road with 150,000 miles plus. And if anybody acts like they know if it will be reliable or not, then they are an "internet expert" & full of toro caca

surprisingly I’m in collage and make $1000+ a week

 

I love turbos.

My current daily driver (ecoboost) has 2 of them. Yeah....only 73,000 miles so far so long term longevity is unknown....but 400 HP/ 415 ft lbs out of 3.0L is a lot of smiles/liter.

I think turbos get more of a bad rap (reliability) than they deserve because people tune (or mis-tune) them at a pretty high rate....and if you try it without the supporting mods (especially fuel delivery), bad things occur.

Anyway...I wouldn't put my ST in the mix, but many of the most enjoyable cars I've ever driven were turbocharged. WRXs. MazdaSpeed3s. Even old turbo fox body mustangs. I wouldn't trade my wheel time in any of them for time in a NA V6 Tacoma.
