The front drive shaft spline has apparently rusted and I am unable to remove the shaft from the truck.

Has anyone here had this problem and how did you get it apart.

I am close to ordering a new shaft and just cut this one apart with a torch.

Shaft spline? - The shaft is held in with 8 bolts at the flanges. Are you unable to remove those bolts and get the flanges to seperate? Usually it takes a good smack with a deadblow. You may be able to take a cold chisel and seperate the flanges that way. This is typically not a problem.

    Hi
Here is a picture of the front drive shaft in this Tacoma.

See the blue splines if they don’t move then the only way to get it out is to remove the transfer case or the front differential.

Friday I will cut that shaft right at the grease fitting with a torch. Put the long part in the press and push it apart. Then weld the shaft back tighter.

This truck with 2 others are used exclusively off road on a 16 square mile ranch it will not be driven fast enough to require the shaft to be balanced

That picture is a "Tom Woods" shaft maybe give them a call see what they say.

IIRC that collar on the end of female spline should unscrew giving access to the spline's maybe shoot some PB blaster in there & see if you can get it to move or remove that zerk & see in it's packed with grease.

    Hi

The shaft in this truck is the original and it looks just like the picture.

We still have 6 of these trucks and I have service all of them except for the 2 new ones and they have the same shaft in them.

I have been turning that collar and it doesn’t screw off and I can’t get to it to try to drive it off.

These trucks are not show pieces they are all beat to death we even lost one in to a irrigation ditch while running wide open bent every rod in the engine or we would have 7.

We also have 40 other pieces of equipment some new and some 60 years old. That’s why at 81 they keep me around the new mechanics just have problems with the older equipment.

Look at the collar & see if it has tabs holding it on or a rolled edge, maybe you could remove it with an air chisel.

Pretty sure the spline is meant to be taken apart and put blue ford grease. Maybe replace the boot.

you can try taking it off the truck and pressing it apart.

or expose it to heat, cold, shock, penetrating fluid soak, and see if you can get it apart somehow after doing that, whether it’s using a press or another method.

idk what the whole thing costs to replace. Used is cheaper. New would cost more than trying to save the existing part.

never had that part balanced by itself. Only the whole propshaft assembly balanced at a shop when refreshing carrier bearing (used Ford IEDLS poly) and new spicer u joints.

Thank you all for your suggestions.

The cost of replacement is $200 plus shipping.

The cheapest way is to cut the shaft in half with the torch and complete the work started and order new shaft.
