Way way back in the 1970s and 1980s, early plastics would degrade under sunlight. This was pretty much what 90% of the parking lot in my high school looked like. It's a misnomer that the carpet blocks heat. Not exactly. It blocks UV radiation.

Oh. And a dash carpet kidnapped my daughter.

Ooooohhhhh…. I’ve only ever seen a handful of these up here in the frigid north. Usually in transplants from warmer climates that braved the alcan or were barged up. I thought it was caused by the heat, but UV damage makes way more sense. From the comments here I was assuming it was fading or discoloration

some us live in areas where sunshine is measured differently, and paint fade issues are traded for snow and rust

the only place I have ever seen dash covers be used, for direct sunlight/heat protection and the drawbacks it comes with

is in AZ where the sun is burning and around 110deg summer.

In other areas that are not that
combined with window tint, it may not be necessary.

303 on the dash also protects.

Gee Bob....nothing, it is just cheaper to replace than the dash....But, come to think of it, I never had a mat degraded by the UV, but I only keep my cars 10 years or so...

i have used a dash cover on other trucks and don't hate them or think all of them look bad. they helped save the dash and looked OK imo. if i felt i needed it for my tacoma, i would buy one.

tacoma owners will occasionally post photos of colored rings they used to replace the chrome inside the cab. i have seen red and blue used. to me, these are way worse than a dash cover but to each their own.

    LS1 swap with nitros.
When the Toyota dealer damages your dash during an evaporator replacement, and refuses to replace the dash, a cheap dash carpet is the solution. And it holds up against the FL and now AZ sun.

Well, I'll have to remove all of that before I can install my dash mat. Do you have a trailer hitch mounted flag and nuts on your truck?
