so its time for new tires, mine are not quite at the wear bar yet but close. ill be moving to CO in 2months from RI (2500miles) should i get new tires now and put the towing mileage on them, or will current ones be ok. 265/70/r17 Ridgegrapplers. will be towing enclosed dual axle trailer at about 4500lbs with wdh and brake controller. want to be safe, but dont want to put all that wear on new ones if i dont have to.

    Thanks

What are the DOT Date codes on the tire? What are the thread depths in /32"? New is 13.5/23" unless you got the 10 ply and then they were 16.4/32".

Why chance it? Just get the tires, unless it's a money thing.

How old are the tires? I replace mine at 5-6 years no matter how much tread I have.

Replace. Cheap insurance and you need to do it anyway. If it was a 1000 lb trailer I might not but at 4500 you don’t want to screw around with safety.

The answer is always yes for new tires.

I have the factory Toyo Open Country A30s on my 2022 TRD Sport; they have almost 15,000 miles on them and would probably make a great towing tire for your move. I've been thinking to upgrade to a set of Michelin Defender LTX tires, if you're interested, I'll make you a deal on the Toyos.

New rubber is nice but $$$.
Condition is pretty easy to see.
Most of what I got is out of date but they are stored like mushrooms in the dark.
We run low mileage and I’ve had no issues so far!
I don’t tow so that’s something to consider but tires have no cracks or dry rot due to sun exposure.

Imagine sitting roadside, Sunday 2 AM, 20 miles from civilization, tires blowded up ... saying, well, I COULD HAVE REPLACED ...

Your choice. One of my tires loses 4 PSI after a full-fill then holds magically at that ... but TODAY Toyota (they have the tire warranty right now) will either fix that or replace the tire/rim even though I am in the city. I chose.

Assuming your trailer will be fully loaded, and your cab too, you’ll likely be over the payload capacity of the truck and right up against the towing capacity at the same time. Get new tires. To be frank, not for your safety but for the people and families driving in front of you. They are innocent in all this.

I know you won’t listen to this last piece of advice but I’m gonna say it anyway. Mud tires are not a good choice, get Michelin Defenders.

If your tires are less than 5 years old, have atleast 6/32 and otherwise in decent shape I would just finish them off with the tow. I don't know what the weather is like nowadays but also factor in what the weather will be like for your drive. I also find that extra air in the rear tires helps. With the factory Le2's, 40 psi cold seems to be the magic number.

There is an OTT tune for that. $600 tune, $1500 tires ... being a stupid punk kid: priceless.

Mine’s a big pig off the line…. Only until it hits the sweet RPM spot and then it’s a smaller one.

Never forget they are the only thing connecting you to the road. And a very low % of them at that.
