All of the sudden a few days ago my truck started locking the doors when I started it and unlocking when turned it off. Saw this had come unplugged. Tried to search to see what this is but couldn't find any info on it.

Looks like part of an alarm system to me.

Sometimes they install an alarm just to keep it on the lot. And then disable it when the vehicle sells. Of course, I could be wrong. Hope you get more replies so we will both find out.

So...the wires are part of a wiring harness? They are not spliced in, no matter how skillfully? Anything stock would be behind the trim.

Yeah thanks. Weird that the doors would do that when it's unplugged.

Definitely part of some kind of aftermarket system, it may have been dealer installed but it's definitely not a factory item.
Follow the wires and find the control module, there should be numbers on it that will tell you what kind of system it is.

    New truck?

    That's an aftermarket alarm/anti-theft device.

It's made obvious by the self-tapping screws and out of place exposed wiring.

Get it off your truck! Dealers do typically put on an aftermarket alarm and then try to upsell it to the customer. My dealer did it to me. I declined. They whined saying it was already installed. I demanded that they remove it prior to me taking possession of the truck for exactly these types of reasons. Gremlins...unlocking and locking. I would think this would also be able to immobilize your engine as well. And since you don't have the fob, you would be SOL if it "became aware" and decided that you were a threat.

i usually love these "What is this"type of threads. this one is perplexing.

i would have questioned the car salesman about it day-one. it looks like a shoddy install to begin with.

Great question... I'm the 2nd owner. Prior owner didn't know. But she was also selling her Ex husband's truck.

though I have seen it blink in the dark one night when I was sitting in my truck. I assumed it was some sort of tracker, or alarm system that never got pulled out.

One of these days I'll find my truck here had a tacomaworld.com sticker when I purchased it. maybe they know

Mine had this from the dealership. It was for added security. They tried to sell it to me, I said no. I swear they just unplugged something outta it, and that was that. I left it for a couple years, but then pulled it out and reused their screw holes for my trailer brake controller. Now i'm wondering if it's still up under my dash, or if i actually pulled it and tossed it??

It looks similar to what I found in mine. Determined it to be a KARR alarm which were installed by dealerships. They would install it, THEN try to upsell you to pay for it. If you declined, they wouldn’t activate it. But mine has a purple button, yours doesn’t.

It could also possibly be a tracker, but they would typically be installed well hidden. Some dealership install them when selling to someone with bad credit anticipating the need to locate it for a repo.

open up your fuse panel, do you see a rats nest of wires tapped into the harness? around the fuse block? I've a bunch of the taps there i would assume are related to the alarm thing.

    Obviously not.

If you decide to remove it or anything, trace the wiring beforehand as sometimes they can disable your ignition if tampered with.

Mine has something that looks like that but with a button to turn off horn with lock/unlock and a light that flashes as a theft deterrent.

as ugly as the wires on mine look I’ve never had an issue with it.
Key range just failed but I suspect my fob is going bad.

mine seems somewhat sensitive. If I smack the truck it starts honking. But that might be a good thing.
