I finally got around to looking into the adhesive issue with the new TuRD Center Caps. The issue appears to be not accounting for the height of the embossed letters on the inside of the disc. According to the "trusty" Husky digital caliper the height of the letters is 0.25mm. The area of adhesive on the plastic center cap was concentrated only on the area of the letters. As a result of not taking into account the letter height; the adhesive that was applied to the inside of the aluminum disc was not able to contact the plastic center cap above or below the TRD logo. This manufacturing oversight causes the aluminum cover to begin separating at the edges from the plastic cap.

I have three of the newly release TuRD center caps that are experiencing this issue. Looks like it will be 3M to the rescue. However, which double sided tape product will work best based on the height of the logo and keeping the center cap flush to the wheel when mounted?

By default we include a plain color matched cap.

Upon request we can include an FNW cap (alloy background or black background) or a blank alloy-style (lens) cap.

I picked up some

$6 3M VHB 100x200mm~ (4" X8") Double Sided Foam Adhesive Sheet Tape 5952 Automotive Mounting Industrial Grade Very High Bond 5952 (1 Sheets 100x200mm)

3M VHB 9437 double-side tape. Proceeded to scuff up both the inner surface of the aluminum disc and the outer surface of the plastic center cap. Taped the two pieces together. The bond appears to be strong. But only time will tell.

 

Good observation / good decision to go with the VHB foam tape. We use double sided VHB foam tape to attach our cap lenses as well. Not sure why Toyota just applied glue to directly to the back of their lenses, but hopefully they get it fixed for you guys with their new batch.

 

I just placed a order for a set with them, the shipping options showed the 1st of May. Oh well, I'll get them at some point.

 

Good deal. Ordered mine last year when I ordered the original 16” beadlocks.

 

Damn. Gives me time to get my FN wheels.

 

Facts. Got to get with BashFab and get my CMC and some (foreseen) clearance issues on the FJ and I’m ready to get mine mounted.

 

I ordered a set of 5 oem center caps in person at my local dealer this afternoon. Dealer said they were on backorder, but 500 pieces were inbound. I'll know more Friday on an eta. Could be in transit, on a delivery truck or sitting in a box somewhere waiting to be shipped.

They could all be pre-sold as there were 130ish pre-orders ahead of me. The dealer was nice enough to do a search and the closest dealer that claimed to have in stock status was 800 miles away. He mentioned the computer inventory system isn't always accurate.

 

Still no update.

Thinking about placing another order through Elmhurst Toyota. Checkout says eta May 12-14.

 

Finally got around to putting the rings on - I used a small torque wrench I use for my bikes. Set to 75 inch pounds, a spec I found somewhere on here.

 

My OEM caps from an october wheel + cap order finally landed this week!! Did anyone else get there's too?
