2015 TRD Pro 75k or 2016 TRD Off Road 57k miles?

Hey everyone,
I’m wanting to buy my first Tacoma and I have two options. 2015 TRD Pro with 75k or 2016 TRD off road with 57k. Both look clean with good carfax records. I’d love some help or maybe some things to keep in mind from owners. Thanks!

 

2015 no question (assuming all is good with it).

 

I am biased towards the 2nd gen since I own one. But the engine and transmission are arguably better then the 3rd gen truck.

The suspensions are identical. Lifts kits for one fit on the other. The difference is in the engine, trans, and cabin. thats it.

 

I'd avoid the 3rd gen 3.5 v6 like the plague...especially a 2016

 

3rd gen Tacoma sucks, probably the worst generation yet. The 4th gen blows its doors off

Back to the original topic, the second gen is better. Being the last year of that generation.

 

Well if I really thought my vehicle sucked, I wouldn't continue to drive it. But then I am not the kind of person that "settles" for something. To each his own.

I love my 22 trd off-road but between those 2, I’d go with the 15 pro. It’s the last year of the generation and a proven platform. That’s the reason I bought my 22 because I knew there was going to be a new gen soon.

 

Is the 2015 actually a Pro? A lot of carfax reports incorrectly show the 2nd gen as a Pro.

It’s nothing too special at this point as the different suspension from the off road is probably worn out. Most of the other items on a PRO are cosmetic (and the exhaust that some people thing has a drone sound).

Those with a Pro will claim it’s special, but it’s just a limited quantity package on top of what an OffRoad is - combo of the sport painted bits (bumper, grille surround, mirrors, hood scoop), wheels, exhaust and a few other things. Unless it’s the inferno color. The 2015 pro was the only 2nd gen in that color.

 

They’re wanting 30,000 for the 16 and 29,000 for the 15.

3 rd Gen is fine . But being it’s a new Gen in 16 I agree with others .

 

@TacoTy100 consensus has pretty much spoken. For that price and mileage difference, I don't see why you wouldn't pick the 15 Pro all other conditions (frame, general body condition, etc.) being the same. IMH but limited opinion, the only major selling points for the 16 would be:

• More modern interior.
• Tailgate with the cool relief cut and stamped TACOMA deboss.
• If you like the general more modern body lines of the 3rd Gen profile.

If those mean enough to you, then maybe...MAYBE consider the 16? Transmission and engine aren't a plus, period.

 

I'll give you my own personal anecdote.

I bought my truck as my first new to me vehicle. I was very excited, and didn't really know what to look out for as far as things that might irk me. After owning the vehicle for a while, I think many people will agree that the tranny action really starts to grind your gears and really impact your opinion of your own vehicle, leading to a lot of frustration.

Buying and selling vehicles is expensive, energy, and time consuming, and for me, just because the tranny made me want to drive my truck off a cliff, wasn't really worth selling it and getting something new, since in most other regards, the truck did what I needed it to do.

I think a lot of people, when it comes to cars have a hyper consumerist mindset of constantly buying, trading, upgrading, yadda yadda. It's too much for me, too much to get wrapped up in, and I'd rather just take the vehicle and use it, even if it irks me. *shrug emoji*

 

You know the “gear hunting” can be largely mitigated with a simple ECU/TCU flash, right?
