I recently bought a 2011 Taco, 4WD, not a lot of maintenance history. How will I know when it's time to check valve clearance? Engine runs smoothly, no noticeable clicking.

Pretty much never. It's rare they come out of adjustment, and even more rare that it causes issues. It's a fair question.

Typically on other vehicles you get a misfire, loud tapping etc. Hondas need frequent valve adjustments.

With toyotas because valve deposits arent a huge issue, and they have solid lifters, theres rarely wear enough to warrant an adjustment.

I've been at Toyota for 12 odd years and I havent seen any vehicles out of spec yet.
