Rear brake issues

I got so tired of hearing shops say the same thing regarding Toyota rear axle seals / bearing work so I bought this…

This is all great advise!! Tonight going to finish cleaning the brakes and start looking at the other potential problems, definitely gonna check the differential breather; then gonna have a mechanic buddy come over this week to confirm the issues before I get elbow deep into it. Going to see if Napa or another local shop will press the new bearings on for me, because I feel confident doing the brake/shoe and seal work, but don’t have a press or the tool needed in conjunction with the press for the bearings.
Will follow up with report then I learn more.

I'd look for an independent automotive shop or machine shop, as opposed to Napa

 

The differential breather is definitely failing. Going to need to repair that.
Both parking brakes seem to work as expected.

I ended up buying a harbor freight press and the tool he used from suggested eBay retailer. It worked as designed, I have zero complaints. I replaced the bearings and seals on both sides.
But the main culprit was the carrier bearing. It was toast. I used this video

to replace my carrier bearing.
I cleaned, wire brushed and painted my backing plate, drum, etc.
Replaced my brakes and parking brake hardware (waiting for better weather to replace and reattach cable).
New vent breather.

Our roads are pretty muddy this season. While working on the truck, had to use the van as our main family commuter. Now I have to replace the sway bar links on the van and the wife wants to steal the truck. Says it runs better than ever.

I appreciate all the help given by forum members and the aid repairing Herman (trucks name). I learned a lot doing the repairs myself, saved a bunch of money, definitely took a while….but I could do it much faster next time.

Nice work! Glad you got it sorted, and surprised the carrier bearing got bad enough to give you that grinding noise. How were your old rear wheel bearings once removed?

I could shake mine like marraccas and hear them clunk back and forth like crazy.

 

The bearings on the axel honestly were not as bad as expected. But the case that they sit in on the drivers slide had a cut in it that I suspect let the oil into the drum brakes. The passenger side I also ended up replacing the case and serrated bolts, the previous owner had welded them to the backing plate. Both sides the inner and outer seals definitely needed replacing. So, I doubt the bearings were the issue, but, I’m glad i replaced them because in doing so, I caught other issues I would not have seen.
