    Sir, you can't park there.

Hope everyone was OK with whatever happened there. As noted, we need the story.

Yes, everybody is fine, not a scratch. It was just me and my dog, driving on a surprisingly icy road on the side of a mountain in rural Montana. The mountain road was so narrow, that by the time it got icy I could not turn around and had to keep going forward. I finally found a spot to turn around and headed back down. At a certain point, the road slanted a bit downhill (toward a ravine about 100 feet below). I lost all traction. Slow motion no no no no no No No No NO NO NO! Finally, it grabbed a bit of grass and held on, maybe at a 20 degree angle with my left front and right rear tires in the air, only the left rear having any real traction. I put it in park and engaged the emergency brake, but as I started to take my foot off the brake the truck moved a bit...just a touch, but enough to make me press the brake again. LUCKILY, I had my Garmin inreach and activated the SOS, dangling on the side of the mountain. I will NEVER EVER EVER complain about that $12/month monitoring fee, obviously. 30 minutes later (quite fast given where I was), a sheriff's deputy and forest service dude came skating down the road toward me, on foot, grabbing branches as they tried to walk across the ice. They tied off a line to a tree and handed the other end to me, and then helped me out; I immediately turned around and got my dog out of the back seat.

All seemed....ok....the tow truck was coming. 30 minutes later, we heard snap snap snap as the saplings holding up the truck broke, and....there she goes, rolling twice on the way down the mountain until getting stopped by that tree in the photo; maybe 30 feet down the hill. The deputy and ranger were so sympathetic, I thought we were going to have a group hug.

It took the tow truck and two guys 10 hours to pull it up and get it back to their lot. I can't really imagine how they did it from that icy road. They said they had to keep tying off their truck to trees as they made it down the mountain at 1am.

Can't really tell the damage yet; everything exterior is toast; roof, panels, roof, hood, doors, etc. I have no idea about the internal damage. The adjuster is going to look at it tomorrow. I don't know if I will get a check or repairs. The check would probably have to be about $35,000 or so, which would certainly pay for a lot of repairs.

Any thoughts about my next conversation with the adjuster? Anything to ask about?

    OOF! OMG!

Quite the ordeal there! Glad you and pup are safe!
Can’t advise on your upcoming conversation with adjuster since I have never been in a situation like you have.
Just a minor fender bender for me and the other guys insurance covered repairs.

I mean, just ask them what the realistic options will be…they may deem it ‘totaled’ if the cost of repairs is higher than the value of the car and write you a check based on their claims formula.
I’m no insurance claims expert, here’s a quick article for reference.

Geez, glad you’re okay!! I can kind of relate. This is a pic of me and my dog from last year in Montana. I was trying to turn around on a mountain pass trail that was impassable (similar to your story). You can’t see it in the photo but 4 inches behind my tailgate was a 6,000 foot cliff. It was a serious pucker factor moment.

You can tell from the look on my dog’s face that she also understood the gravity of the situation lol

lol funny enough, we did take her out just after that photo to cut our losses (to just me) if I slid off the trail. That was when I learned who my wife really cares about

I think so, but I'm waiting on the official word from the insurance company. The adjuster suspected it would be and said that if the estimated repairs would be 61% of the market value, they would consider it totaled. I'm a bit torn--I miss my baby and would love to see it back in my driveway, but I worry about some undetected damage to the frame, etc. Every single piece of the body needs to be replaced, but I don't know what happened "inside." When I was retrieving my stuff and opened the door, it said hello (ding..ding..ding), dash fired up, etc.

On the positive side, I suspect that they will write me a rather large check based on market value; it may be quite close to what I paid 2 years ago. I paid $43K out the door, and to buy an identical truck now (only 8500 miles!) would be quite close to that.

Not sure what I will do with that money though...looking at the 2024s, maybe try to find a low milage 2021-2022, or...4runner?

well...it could be that, or it could be that she trusted you with the 10-point turn more than she trusted Fido!

It rolled twice. It's a total. Been in the industry for 30 years, have never encountered an insurance repair of a vehicle that rolled over completely once, let alone twice. No one replaces the entire body of a vehicle.
