Hey everyone I’ve had this weird noise for quite some time and it’s finally getting to me. Any ideas on what it could be? I usually get it when my car is cold and I’m backing out of the driveway. It’s rather inconsistent, and even though it seems like it stops when I stop turning the wheel it does not always do that. It kinda seems like it’s coming from behind the dash somewhere on the passenger side but it’s hard to pinpoint. Almost seems like it could be some actuator or motor? Anyone have anything similar?

Is your PS reservoir low? I have a slight leak and when it gets too low I get a hum while turning ... noticeable in the morning turning out of the driveway.

My 06 make a vibrating noise when cold and backing out of the drive way. I assume it is the plastic air intake vibrating. I'll stuff some foam around the fender opening one day. It happens everytime it is cold, maybe a higher idle?

Yeah I’m hoping it’s just something vibrating like this. Where in the intake is it giving you issues exactly?

I think it is where the plastic intake goes through the fender. There is some insulation between the plastic and fender opening. When I touch it I can feel the insulation crumbling.

    minor tweaks
Mine does the same thing, plastic vibrating sound that's noticeable while backing out of the driveway just after firing it up first time in the day, it's worse when it's cold. After driving about 10min it seems to go away. I'm going to check that gasket.

Glad I’m not the only one. One can only pray that it’s something as minuscule as a piece of plastic rattling and not something worse…

Update: I got someone to sit in the drivers seat while I listen and it turns out it was exactly that part of the intake that goes into the fender that is vibrating. Glad it’s not something else making that sound. Is there a part number that anyone knows for that little gasket or would I just have to make my own out of weather stripping or something?

Knowing how Toyota works you probably have to purchase the entire plastic intake system to get the gasket.

Was this resolved for anyone by adding weatherstripping to the plastic intake leading into the fender?

Yes, I finally did this today and the plastic rattling noise is completely gone.

The original gasket was badly deteriorated. I had to use GooGone to remove the old gasket as well as scraping.

I didn't have any other gasket material except some leftover felt gasket from a Green Egg repair I did long ago. It will withstand the heat of a Kamado oven so it should last under the hood. A thick rubber or foam gasket from Lowes or HD should do. I had to use two wraps to get the correct thickness.

I also cleaned the 18 years of thin crud caked inside the intake plenum. Should be good for a couple extra horsepower, LOL.
