They are slow growers. Non hybrid grows faster than hybrid. My regular is 10 years old, and is at least 12 feet tall. Hybrid is 12 years old and is both less wide and 2 feet lower.

Indoors is the only option here right now. This spring has been exceptionally warm with the snow pack completely melted for weeks and only the plowed snow banks in the shade hanging on. And the forecast is for 1-3 inches of snow tonight with more potentially Saturday. Cold frames would require heat to keep tender plants alive. We have not had any of the "early spring" bloomers come up yet. No crocus or forsythia, etc.

Freak year here AGAIN. This time sunny and warm for a week in MARCH. May cool a bit today, but holy moley all our various berry bushes leafing and flowering, other stuff - trees not so easily fooled. This was a cold cruel windy winter. I think maybe two fruit trees killed, we will see.

I uncovered my figs. Let the base at ground level dry. Will sand and lime today.

    Grass is going nuts.

Planted 3 shore pines out with my created forest in the back 40. 3rd year now, evergreen trees and oaks are doing good!

Fruit trees here are behind or maybe on track? Last year they were way off. Crabapple is starting blooms if frost didnt kill them, and still slow on the other trees.

Can any of you guys recommend a good pair of gloves that are sticker proof??? Tons of wild raspberry vines everywhere that I want to pull up, without getting stickers in my hands..... I've got some leather ones that don't keep them out

THICK leather works OK. Maybe there are better synthetic or something, but thick leather and TOOLS work ok. Don't ever try to grip a bramble with force!

In addition to gloves, use a rake to pull the vines. Flip it upside down, with tines pointing up.

Debating on putting weed barrier but not sure if that will have an effect on soil temps, is soil temp an issue?

The potential for snow yesterday turned into 10 plus inches. Cold frames would not do well! Welcome to spring in Maine! No part of the state was spared. Coastal communities received ice. Some places received more than 20 inches. We have 8 inches of snow and two inches of sleet. My 60lb dog can walk on top of the snow/sleet without sinking.

It is 55 degrees here. Working on another raised bed today. Last cold snap killed the lilac bushes we had planted 3 weeks ago. They did not have any roots.
