2012 Base Tacoma no JBL - Head Unit Connections

Hello everybody.

Rookie guy here just trying to learn what I can to fix this audio problem I've had in my 2012 base double cab for several years now.

Symptom: Head Unit randomly cuts out and comes back on. Most of the time it ends up in a 1/2 second loop of shutting down and turning back on. Fuses are fine. I believe the HU is done.

After research on this forum and google, I've learned about stereos, connectors, harnesses, etc but definitely am a bit overwhelmed. I've summed up what I've learned about the connectors in the back of the head unit in the attached photo. I'm trying to retain as much use from the connectors as possible. Could anyone help me identify everything so I can decide if its worth trying to wire/harness it all to the new after-market stereo?

Things I do use: Audio / Bluetooth / Steering Wheel Controls / USB
Things I don't use: XM Radio / AM / FM / NAV

Any radio will keep the things you use, and still have AM/FM as well. Most will be compatible with XM if you get a separate module.

hop on Crutchfield and look around. They will even wire up the new harness for you (for a fee, or course)

the wiring, mounting kit, etc will run you about a hundred bucks. Maybe a little more

I have been surfing Crutchfield and forums for the last week or so and am saw a number of off-the-shelf harnesses. They all say compatible with my truck but I’m not 100% sure all the relevant connectors are provided. So, I’m doing extensive research upfront.

I do intend to solder the new harness to new radio plug so that I can keep all of my factory harness connectors.

I’ve made some purchases so far with varying success:

Metra AX-TYAMP1-SWC Amp Interface with SWC (fits 3 of the existing factory connectors)

Meta 70-761 (which does not match up with any connectors)

Current proposed radio: Pioneer DEH-S6220BS
I had the intention of using a Bluetooth radio with a decent app that I could pair with a GPS chipped iPad to cover NAV/bluetooth/sound.

Feel free to guide me away from this path if it’s a terrible idea.

That's a decent radio, I have a similar Pioneer in mine (about 2 yrs old). If you don't care about nav or a backup camera it will serve you well. I have a standalone GPS myself and no backup cam.

I'm trying to recall but you won't have as many needed connectors as yours is no frills. I have 2 amps and used RCAs separate for those so I can't help with that.

 

You wont use all of the factory connectors, so dont let that get in your head.

You need
-Radio of your choice

-Metra dash kit, based on your dash color (matte black, gloss black, grey, etc)
-Soldering iron and heat shrink, or some red/pink butt connectors and a pair of Klein crimpers
-phillips screw driver
-10mm socket with extension
-basic flat panel tool. no need for the 7-piece kit
