took off my leer 180 cap to find my truck was scratched badly. Is this more about something that was done wrong when putting on/taking off the cap or is this what tends to happen when the cap is sitting on the truck bed and being driven around?

so basically if a hard cap scratches your truck just from driving around, does that mean everyone that puts a hard cap on their truck ends up with scractches? im trying to figure out if i did something wrong..

I'd lean towards installation error. I had a Leer 180 on my 2nd gen for nearly 10 years and had removed in a few times with no scratches. when I removed it for good (sold it) there were zero scratches.

Please repost pic. Maybe not as a pdf…

And maybe combine this with your other thread about how to waterproof the cap… one stop shopping.

dude im sorry that sucks. I have a protop cap, same shit as the leer/ARE. i bought it used from a dude on marketplace and we installed it in a ralphs parking lot together, so no professional installation. I did scratch my bed a little but that was because i wasnt careful. It is nowhere near as bad as the picture you showed. Maybe the cap isnt secured properly to your bed and it is moving around while you drive.

I would check underneath the shell where it meets the bed fender panels and see if there is some fiberglass fraying that may be scratching your bed.

What somebody wrote. Looks like whoever installed cap, was prying with something because would not line up.

Did you look under the cap to see if it was indeed that cap & not someone prying to get it off? My leer has never scratch my truck like that. That thing is moving around or something? What fasteners are you using?

The fasteners are washers/bolts...will post a pic later

I will look for the fraying under shell question...good idea

I have this scratching all along one side of my truck and minimal on other side. So i dont think it was someone trying to pry it off. It runs the lenght of the truck.

How tight do you guys torque down bolts to keep it on the truck?

I was told this can happen from off road use, cause the bed will flex? Although the person that told me that did not see these pictures, it was over the phone so they may have a different answer after seeing this much damage
