Looking to move back to Phoenix from Southern Wisconsin. Please comment on good and bad experiences you've had with a particular mover and any advice you'd give about finding one. Previously when I moved I just rented a U-Haul but I don't have it in me to do that this time. I'd appreciate any feedback!

Last time it was cheaper to pay local movers on each end to load and unload a truck I rented.....

Last time I moved it was a company paid relo.
They arranged it through United Van. Those guys were amazing. They insisted that they do all the boxing and packing. They arrived with all the cardboard, packed, inventoried, and loaded in one day. They even built crates on the spot and treated the aquarium like it was the ark of the covenant. Everything arrived on the other side with zero damage.

I have no idea what it cost. Probably a lot. I hope it was a lot.

Just used from FL to AZ. Work paid. I asked them and they said around $40k. They packed up the house and all. Would use them again

Mayflower. I did a little more research and it's actually not that bad. A U-Haul truck and trailer would cost me about $5k between the rental and fuel and then I'd have to load and unload it as well, as well as chug it across the country. Now I just get to hop in the Tacoma and head west. This will be the 3rd (and hopefully last) time I've made this move and I'd rather pay someone for the dirty work.
With that said, I have a very large toolbox that added a lot to the quote. Without it, the estimate was approx $6K.

Be wary of "moving brokers". I got several quotes previously of less than $2K to make this move, and those are the ones that hold your stuff hostage and tell you need to pay a ton more in order to get your stuff.

The only way I could fill that truck would be if I put my vehicles in it along with everything else. That's a lot of stuff. And 40K? and you'd use them again? Call me next time and I'll even give you a discount.

I mean why not use them again if you're not the one paying for it?

This is the way. I have heard too many nightmares, the worst of which people sitting in empty houses for weeks and no one knows where their stuff is. It seems like the actual transport is where it all goes sideways.

Another option is pods, but still the problem becomes transport/losing the pod.

I’ve had work move me a few times and I’ve done U-Haul. If you pay someone go with one of the reputable van lines like United. Get the quote from them directly and not from a third party.

Well a 3,000 sq ft house, 3 car garage worth of tools, 3 motorcycles, and a LOT of LEGO sets filled it up good. Cars went via enclosed semi separately. I think a big part of the cost was they packaged everything. Furniture, clothes, tools, toothbrushes, etc.

Uhaul Boxes. Moved from WA to MA for cheap that way. You can hire independent contractor movers through uhaul also.
