I was t boned Thursday evening. Other driver was driving too fast and blew through the turn. I assume the truck is totaled. There is a visible dent in the frame and the rear axle is misaligned. I’m wondering if I should try and strip what I can off the truck before it goes in for an estimate. I’ve already sent pictures to insurance so not sure if it’s okay for the truck to show up with no shell, different tires, etc… Any advice is appreciated. The truck is 2008 TRD sport 4x4 with 227xxx miles.

Rough quote on that is going to be like 5-8k I’m guessing. They will want the body shop to cut out a cab piece from another wrecked truck and weld it to yours and then replace the door.
Lot of labor to disassemble the interior to access all of the area needed for this.

I don’t think it will be deemed a total loss.

Depends how bad the frame is. They may be able to put it on a frame machine and fix it. The door and rocker panels are fixable.

To answer your question, my 2021 DCSB 6MT TRD OR was totaled in June of 2022 and I negotiated with the insurance company to take off what I wanted, which included my OEM tonneau, bed extender, bed divider, and little things they never would have noticed anyway. However taking off all the mounting hardware took time in the hot July Arizona sun. All the stuff went on my replacement 2023 6MT TRD Pro. I benefitted from the high used market and got $8K more for my TRD OR than I paid for it. However the best thing, in your case and mine, is that no one was hurt.

When insurance totaled my 2018 Tacoma after it was rearended, I went to the body shop and took off the Diode Dynamics fog lights, RekGen mud flaps, Weathertech floor liners, bed mat, toolbox, and a few other things before the truck was hauled off.

    EDIT: corrected my typo.

You can take off any add-ons provided they weren't replacements for a factory part. Any add-ons that replace a factory part, you've gotta put the factory part back on if you take off the add-on.

For example, you can keep your cap. But if you had installed an aftermarket hood, you could only keep the aftermarket hood if you put the factory hood back on. Same is true of wheels/tires. You can't keep those and leave the truck sitting on the ground, but you could put factory wheels/tires back on. I've seen guys buy 4 bald junk tires to replace their good tires. You can do that, but the insurance company will reduce the value a bit for having junk tires on the truck. You can remove your aftermarket stereo, but you can't just leave an empty hole in the dash. Gotta put the factory one (or some other aftermarket one) back in. However, if you added a subwoofer and there was no factory sub that it replaced, you can remove and keep that.

    This!
and I think @not a charger intended to say "You can't take off any add-ons provided they weren't replacements for a factory part, unless you put the factory part back on" which is what I have been told by insurance as well.

I would just replace the door. Always good to get that first broadside out of the way. :)

Seriously, doesn't look that bad. Live with it. If you don't know what you're doing, don't do it. Simple as that.

The sentence continues below the pic. I did a double take as well.

Sorry to hear about your truck, OP.

Thanks for the replies I appreciate the input. Picture probably doesn’t do it justice as the cab and bed are badly misaligned and the doors and tailgate won’t open. Follow up question; any chance insurance is gonna cover a damaged bike rack or bike?

Depends. Both my bikes are $$$$ and I had those added to my insurance. Yes, they will insure anything.

If your auto insurance does not. Your homeowners insurance might.

That's a darn good question. I would certainly hope so.
