    A suggestion...

You should put a marque in your rearview window to express your opinion. lol

I've always wanted to do that:

"Can you keep a safe distance because 5ft isn't it...on the highway"

"I'm going 10 mph over the speed limit and you're still riding may ass...what's up with that?"

Yeah the 1-2 shift worry is odd. I drive my manual ‘99 Taco like a truck. 1st……….2nd……….3rd……….etc……….

Think the take off in a Tacoma is slow, our old Chevy C70 dump 5 speed with a two speed rear end. 1st….wind that out, then clutch in, pull up on the knob….wind that out, then clutch in, knob down, shift into 2nd….repeat, and so forth, then hope some SOB doesn’t cut you off, and make have to down shift unnecessarily, to repeat the whole process over. :)

Of course it didn’t matter much if they rear ended ya…the pintle hitch would ruin their day. :D

I genuinely don't understand the 1-2 comments relative to following traffic; I've driven my Tacoma in every traffic situation imaginable, from rural highways, mountain roads, snow and sleet covered roads, and into, around, and through major cities like Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and DC. The 1-2 shift isn't an issue in any way, shape or form. Apparently the only damage to the rear of my truck I need to be worried about is when it is parked in it's assigned parking space in front of my home.

That usually happens when stopping rather than accelerating. It’s not that I don’t care about anyone else. I’m fine with being obliging or courteous and will romp on the pedal when it’s necessary but I make that determination , not them.

I'm curious about the 1-2 shift thing mentioned above.
My 1991 has a "truck" transmission, and it does take some time for the syncros to engage and it to drop into gear.
Is this is what is meant?

Hard to tell what folks are talking about; our 1995 F-150 with the 4.9 liter I-6 and a 5-Speed Manual takes a bit longer to go from first to second, but even then I never find anyone riding up my rear bumper.

I think so, it really isn’t a short throw trans like in a sports car. Which I think most of the complaints are from guys coming from sports sedans expecting the same in truck. Granted Toyota trucks have long been marketed as a sports “cart”. I am sure you already know this, SR5 means “Sports Rally 5 Speed”

Learned to drive a manual in a 70s F350 dump truck with Borg-Warner T-18(or 19?) 4 speed. Talk about a lonnnnng time to get from 1st to 2nd……………

    Itz JDM tyte, yo!
I rev it up a bit higher on 1st before shifting into 2nd.

I also find that whenever I shift at a later RPM from 1 to 2, it’s pretty smooth instead of clunky when I shift at a lower RPM.

It’s not the transmission, it’s waiting for the rpm to drop so the truck doesn’t buck.

Never noticed, maybe because I tend to drive slow???

Thought you guys were talking about how long the shift throws were.

I drive fast, I drive slow, I shift fast, I shift slow, it matters not. The only time my Tacoma might do what you call "buck" is immediately after a cold start on a very cold day, say below 20°F, it might buck a bit if I shift too early (i.e. below say, 2,700 RPMs).

Only time I get the buck, if I am tired or daydreaming and mis-shift. That happens in any manual.

I experience the same thing, especially going into 5th and 6th. I'm not revving the truck up that high while it's cold however. The odd bump feeling (almost like a misfire) driving along while the engine is warming up is definitely more noticeable in the manual's as well.

It is just not up to operating temp. Every engine I have ever driven is like that.
