I bought my 4.0L in Denver and took a leisurely drive back to NM on 2 lane roads through the mtns, top speed was about 60mph on those roads and the avg speed was a bit lower, prob 50mph with turns. It got 22mpg on the very first tank and I was thinking great mileage. Unfortunately I've only hit that MPG a couple times since (14yrs) and each time it was driving about those same speeds at higher elevations on 2 lane roads.

One must remember the FI will lean the mixture as the elevation increases. If it didn't these trucks wouldn't get out of their own way at that altitude. I ride motorcycles at high elevations also and they get noticeably better mileage when you start getting up around 8K', it's a combination of typically slower speeds (40~60mph) a leaner mixture compared to sea level and very little stop and go. Basically ideal conditions to get good mileage.

I agree with most of what you said. The mixture actually stays the same with EFI, however. You get less gas as the air gets thinner, to maintain a constant mixture. Otherwise the mixture would get richer.

Either way 45-65 MPH cruising results in 23+MPG with a 3G.

Pretty disappointing MPGs, considering it’s 70% highway.

Yep. Best I got was 24.5 cruising around 60 in the summer. My truck was stock except for E rated 265/65/17 ko2s.

Now with all the mods she gets 18-21 (winter/summer) cruising around 60.

Not to be contrary, but if they left the fuel the same, as the air got thinner and it does, if there was no compensation the mixture would go rich causing performance to drop even further then the typical 2% per 1000' caused by less O2. If they didn't the system's stoichiometric ratio would be skewed rich and the truck would be throwing codes. Fuel mixture compensation for altitude is very common on a modern FI engines for the same reason piston airplane engines have a mixture knob.

Here's 2 quick ones from here. Go out on the web it's explained pretty well.

You're right, its semantics, yes it targets stoemetric, as the air is thinner it needs less fuel. Is it leaned out, not in the mixture, it just takes less fuel to achieve it's stochiometric ratio. I refer to it as leaning it out from tuning carburated motor's for higher alt which always requires smaller jets. But you're correct, mixture is the same.

That’s, not much better to be honest. I average just shy of 19MPG on about 60% city and the rest on NC backroads and I-40.

not worth the several thousand dollars the 4th gen will cost over the 3rd Gen.

Nope, but I was thinking of those that’d argue for fuel savings as one reason to upgrade to the new taco.

Fuel savings has never been a reason to buy a new car over one you already own

This is the exact mileage I get with my 3G on normal daily commuting which is 120 miles round trip, 90% highway

Fuel ecomony threads are always the best lol.

I will back up the statement about generally better MPG's at high elevation. I notice it each time I have my truck in the Rockies.

Also confirming our trucks do significantly well at speeds right around 45-50 then goes to shit once you pass 60. Goes to show what a disaster the aerodynamics on these trucks is. Keeping to sub 50mph, I'll get 18-20 mpg. Normal highway driving still nets me 14-15. Not showing numbers for argument sake, but rather to show the delta between mpg's and speed w/ these trucks.

You’re commuting from where I lived in high school, to where I lived before that. Weird.

    My dad did that commute.

tail wind and few hills 155 mile average 23.5 with ARE Camper Shell. Using adaptive cruise on two bar setting behind semi trucks will yield these MPGs due to decrease in drag. On open road it’s more like 19 at best. 2021 TRD OR DCSB 4x4
Edit: picture taken by passenger. Don’t use phone while driving.

columbia, SC to Cincinnati, OH and back at 70+ got me 21mpg average. Stock truck with stock size tires. Second time I did it with a headwind and got closer to 19. All on 87 octane. Next time I do the drive I’ll use higher octane and report back. Don’t forget new trucks are Turbo… so even at higher MPG the cost per mile is the same or even more due to using more expensive fuel!

best I got in second gen TRD OR DCSB 4x4. ARB bumper, sliders, 285/70r17 all terrains, Icon coilovers set at 3”, Dakar rear leafpacks, ARE Camper Shell cruising around 60-65. Anything over 65 in second gen was 17mpg. Get an UltraGuage or ScanGauge and you can figure out how to get best mileage possible.

Probably because you can coast most of the way back!
