60+ year old thread.

One of the first jobs I had working at a couple gas stations, after I graduated was kinda crazy when I look back at it. We had low staff of 3, good people, I had the misfortune of being the island attendant, tire and brake kid. I was one of the high paid employees getting .05 cents over minimum but we had a nice 80-88 hr work week and 1 day off a month. So 40 hours straight time 40 + overtime. One guy got 1 Friday, the other 1 Saturday and I got 1 Sunday a month off every month and I closed. Every Job after that overtime seemed like normal.

Good morning. Wife thanks everyone for the birthday wishes. I grew up in the suburbs of DC and we had a local hardware store. Green Meadows hardware where you could buy anything you needed. They even had grass seed by the pound.

We keep getting our storm and snow totals adjusted down along with timing. It was supposed to be over by now, by last weeks forecast. Now we're getting it today and tomorrow. So far about 2" maybe a few more yet. I would rather have rain at this point, I was getting in the mindset for yardwork and my garden planted.

Thanks Sue. If he just looks at the labs, and I don't tell him about my wonderful Spring.....

 

My dad had those gutter screens on his house and when he got too shakey for the ladders (heart related) I cleaned them off for him several times. The leaf fragments, sticks and other debris that falls in the forest - would clog the screens. PITA to clean off the entwined gunk. And build a roof edge dam worse than a clogged gutter......except it was at a higher elevation. Bad news.
After he passed I took them off.
While I was working on that project his neighbor (that I had known for 50 years, he built his place the same summer as dad) came over and suggested I remove the end cap at the downspout and add a short extension. I walked over and had a look at his. In a gentle rain water would simply travel down the gutter and downspout as usual. In a "gulley washer" - the crap would get washed right out the end. Apparently worked for him - he told me he (and his son) were using a garden hose to wash them out, but not nearly so often.

 

Sometimes, being tossed into Time Out is like being a kid with an endless summer. Tossed out of the house at dawn, not expected home until dinner was served.

"My Life with the Walter Boys" - my wife watched it with me and realized it was close to our family. I only had six kids, but my parents continually adopted stray cats, dogs, and kids. So it's not unusual to have ten for dinner. My wife grew up with a sister. The other day, she was commenting about her Mom pulling drawers out of the fridge to scrub everything. The only time I remember that was monthly freezer defrost cycles. Cardboard boxes, newspapers, clean out freezer/fridge to defrost and wipe down. Hand-held hair dryers appeared in the late 1960s, which made the job go faster.

 

I remember using a hair dryer to defrost the freezer and put pans of hot water in to help melt the ice.
