I scrolled thru the first 17pgs of this forum and never found, so Ill start a thread.

2012 Single Cab 4x4, 2.7L 4cyl automatic…61k miles. when I accelerate, there’s an intermittent rattle that sounds like it might be a heat shield.. but the heat shields underneath seem mounted solid. Anybody experienced this? If so, how do I get rid of it? Even my 5yr old said, daddy why does your truck sound like that?

So DEFINITELY NOT pinging/detonation? Is it a "vibration" type of sound? On my previous Ranger, the heat shield surrounding the exhaust manifold was making a noise at when accelerating. It wasn't loose but I found a crack in it, so what was happening was at the right rpm, the metal on each side of the crack would rub against each other and make noise. I bent one side up a little so it wouldn't rub.

Correct. At certain RPM’s. I guess I’ll have to inspect the heat shield more closely. Not engine related at all

Found it… I think. This particular section of the heat shield is corroded away from the nut that secures it around the rear-most stud. I placed a large washer there, then tightened the nut back. It helps a little, but doesn’t sit flush, from some left-behind corrosion. Might have to get a new heat shield and nuts altogether

thats the culprit! mine looked just like that. Look at all the other ones as well, if that one is corroded, the others cant be far behind!
