I checked the fuses and I currently do not have the orange wire, orange white, and brown black are not connected at all.

    Wait for it...
This is almost a year bump but darn it someone out there will be glad I did it. I recently made some audio changes in my '05 with aftermarket head unit & thought it would be a good time to connect my illumination wire (even tho I NEVER do)! Once I was "done" the next morning I realized I had no dash lights, all others worked etc just like a million Google searches revealed. A frustrating week later after denying it was going to be a bad dimmer switch I tore back into it determined & realized the ORANGE/BLACK wire (from the quick connect harness, BROWN/WHITE on vehicle harness) needs to be connected to ground. This is in the connector with the purple & green speaker wires. Tapped in & voila! Hopefully some other suddenly annoyed Tacoma owner will find this post & not have this on their brain for days.

i had the same problem today, no gauge lights, no tail lights, blown fuse. replaced fuse, cut and taped orange/ orange/white illumination wire to the radio (jvc head unit, metra adapter) and gauge and tail lights work now. as far as dimming, i will have to figure that out after work, probably just keep the illumination on the head unit relatively low.

It’s been a while since this post but I’m only running into it now. I installed a pioneer parking brake bypass for my truck and now I lost the back lighting for my PRND2L and my clock.. you think it’s the same problem? And if so can I just splice in a wire to the orange (illumination) over to the black wire (ground)? I also have a metra plug and play wiring harness hooked to it.
