Hi all. I have a 1998 2.4L 5 speed manual RWD Taco with 178K miles on it. I have been having an issue passing California emissions exam for some reason. I have no check engine light. Everything seems to pass except this one test at 15mph. Examiner said there is no vacuum in one of the hoes he checked. I took it to a mechanic and he said the EGR valve is working and he can’t find any issue. What could cause this to fail. So far I have decided to change the little green vacuum switch that is located under the intake manifold and also cleaned out the EGR temperature sensor but have not retested, I want to make sure I fix all possible causes before I spend on smog test again. Is there anything else I should look at ?

You should call and talk to your smog shop- most places only charge once, and you can test multiple times. In your case, you should be able to fix your issue, and take it back to the same shop, and they retest, but not charge you. That's at least how it's been at every smog shop I've used. If you're trying to take it to multiple shops hoping one will pass you, thats another story.

    4 run, 2 don't
Some places will even waive the charge if it doesn't pass
