Anyone had your cat stolen recently?

For a long time a couple years ago catalytic converter theft seemed like it was happening to everyone. I have a friend who owns a Tundra who had his stolen twice in one year. When I was at the dealer getting some work done about 18 months ago I met a Taco owner who had the same thing happen. At the same time, a guy who worked at the dealer told me there were 11 people there just that day who had had there cats stolen. I posted some threads here asking about converter shields for those of us who own the 4 banger but never actually got around to getting one.

But all the noise about Taco cat theft seems to have died down and I'm wondering if the law has somehow cracked down on it enough that it's just not happening as much. Anyone?

Oddly, just last week a friend told me about their cat that had stolen shoes from all over the neighborhood. They posted photos of them in the neighborhood Facebook group so people could reclaim them.

a friend that is stolen from his truck outside of Detroit about eight months ago. He was up there, working a job. His truck was in an open parking lot at a hotel. Appeared to be cut off with a sawsall

 

Supposedly theft is trending down in Colorado this year. Still, I was a victim of early morning sawzalling 2 years ago, not letting it happen again

 

Cat theft has drastically dropped during/after COVID due to various reasons. IIRC demand for the minerals within dropped, requirements on recyclers to prove ownership of cats increased, and there were a few large theft rings that were busted.

 

I was hoping for data that showed a sharp decrease in Cat Theft due to thieves getting shot while in the act.

 

I saw that on the news the other day. Tail gate theft is pretty bad there too.

 

Maybe it's good then I already tore obvious gashes in my wheels from rocks while wheeling then so they look less appealing.

 

I have a set of cats in the garage incase anyone needs them. Yes, the vehicle kind.

Here in the People's Republik of Kalifornia, catalytic theft is condoned.
They ripped my daughter's 2005 Prius because that year had the most precious metals to steal.
Next, they tried to rip the cat from my 1991 Truck, which shows how damned stupid they are... maybe $5 value at most.

We took the Prius, the RAV4 and the new Tacoma to Marco Muffler here for cat cages.
Money well spent.

The father of my shop owner had his diesel smog gear ripped out of his truck.
The jobber price for the parts alone was $7,000 plus the huge labor of repairs.
Nearly the entire underside of a current diesel is smog control equipment.

Nah - it just makes them more appealing, like how already broken-in jeans cost more than stiff, scratchy new jeans.

 

I've come to realize if a thief really wants something, they'll find a way to get it. All we can do is try and prevent it the best we can and not be an easy target. OP I'd recommend a few things to be proactive...the SaBellCo Tailgate lock, the Millercat Cat Shield (Stainless if you can, it'll even act as a skid plate) and the Bobber Cycle Shop deck/cable lock. Hope it helps.

I hadn't seen the cable lock before. I've got a tailgate anti theft device on mine, made by a guy here at TW, but the cable lock would be an extra layer. I do hope to get a cat shield someday when it's in the budget. For now I just try to always park in high traffic areas, or drive the Camry if I'm going to a shady part of town.
