I took my truck in for a bad carrier bearing. The shop did a complimentary inspection and found bad wheel bearings as well. I've been hearing grinding, so I've been suspecting that as well. The shop is asking $2.2k for the carrier bearing and $2.9k for the wheel bearings. Am I insane or are the prices?

Do you have the necessary tools to perform said work yourself?

Do you have the knowledge and experience to conduct said work correctly?

Do you have the shop space and any other accommodations for making this task easy to take care of?

Not trying to justify what they're doing as I don't agree on the pricing for either, especially since the carrier bearing you can do yourself. But often times when members make such posts, they exclude all the other items the quote includes (which could make up much of those costs).

So why not post your quote?

The term price gouging applies to essential goods only.

Besides you can just go to one of ten other shops. So how are you being taken advantage of if you can go elsewhere?

At $2.2k for a CB 'alone' and nothing else, yes you are being taken advantage of.
The parts like $100, and its maybe 2 hours of screwing around if you don't know what you're doing.

The carrier bearing price would still be ridiculous if they were installing a whole new driveshaft, they must think they have to disassemble the entire truck to do it. Is your rear diff blown or something and you forgot to mention it?

Fair points. I don't have the tools to do the job myself, otherwise I would.

Here's the quotes/pics of the inspection they sent.

That's insane.. Who is paying these prices, someone must be if they're charging it

You definitely do need a new bearing, but take it somewhere else
Maybe take it to three other shops, someone will do it for <500. Probably in the 300-450 range.

Yeah, I went under a few days ago for a regular lube and noticed the play. Made an appointment with the shop right away.

Is $3k normal for wheel bearings though? Parts should run me ~$200 per side by my estimate, and I can't imagine there's that much labor involved.

can this be a bidding war? If he drives it to PA I’ll do all the work for free and let him sleep in my work truck while he’s here

Just from a quick google search the price seems to be around 3-400 in labor per side (on the higher end). So should be in the range of $1200 total, not $3000.

    minor tweaks
I'm getting ready to do the carrier brg, 3 U-joints, gear and motor oil changes. All total the parts cost me $250 for the Carrier brg, 3 Spicer U joints, Enough Mobile One Gear oil to do both Diffs and the Xfr case (1.5gal) drain plug seals and 5 qts of motor oil. Just waiting on my finger to heal up and an oil filter.

I'd say they're kind of proud of their work.

Maybe look at the quote again and see if it a decimal point and not a comma before the zeros

What kind of ‘shop’ estimate is that?

    No labor hrs
    No part pricing
As a Customer, I’m not doing a proportion calculation based on tax amount to find out part pricing

    simply a ‘picture estimate’
    Very convincing mind you.

    Get other quotes
    Or
Make a weekend out it, buy some members beer/dinner/sleep in a truck

the latter sounds like fun and might learn something!!!!!!

shit, if/when my rear bearings go out and some members offered, I would be all over that in a heartbeat!
    I’m great cook too

Bc of the picture, one step above a RV repair shop’s usual estimate

A yellow Post It note with a dollar figure on it

what part of CA you in? I could recommend a couple if you're in Southern CA.

    Prices definitely seem exorbitant.
