I’m considering upgrading the exhaust on my truck. I would prefer something that has a deeper tone to it, and does not drone at highway speeds (I do a lot of cross country driving). I’m specifically looking to avoid the “fart can” sound that my sister has on her Infiniti G37x lol.

All V6's have a natural drone, so any muffler that makes the exhaust louder, will drone. It's why a lot of people revert back to stock.

Watch youtube videos to be sure.

If you want more noise, go intake, just my 2c.

Exhaust sounds are kind of subjective, what sounds good to one person may not sound good to another.

That being said I have the Magnaflow Street Catback system on mine and I like it, not too loud unless you really get on it and not much interior drone but it's stupid money now (was about $400 when I got it).

Here's an exhaust comparison video, it's not the greatest but it's the best one I've found.

I’ve watched a lot of videos but it can be really hard to tell what the true sound is. Unfortunately, I live in mostly Ford and Chevy country so there’s not a lot of local trucks I could use for reference. Do you know any good YouTube channels for exhaust? Also what is meant by “intake?” I’m assuming cold-air intake?

Thank you for the video. This helps a lot, although it is the 3.5L engine in the video. Is there much of a difference in terms of sound?

    better than stock
stock couldn't hear if the engine was on
TRD catback had highway drone though so I put the 1141 to fix that

it's not magical sounding. Don't know what difference other stuff makes like
    -different muffler
    -y pipe
    -headers

probably partly due to what the engine is.
Not looking for magical sound. Looking to hear what it's doing to drive it.

It's never going to sound like a V8 unfortunately. That said, I have an oem TRD catback cut off after the downturn over the axle. Sounds damn near stock to me at this point. Had it on for like 14 years. It's an option though, if you can find one/

TRD is the only one I've heard that seems reasonable.

There is no measurable power gain to be had, so no matter what you get you are just paying for noise.

There's some 4.0L ones in there too.

I too have the Magnaflow Street Catback on my 2nd Gen and love it. I had it installed shortly after I purchased the truck new.

ive had the borla s type on my last tacoma and enjoyed it a lot it was fun sounding. it was never to bad on noise tbh same with the trd exhaust both of them to me have a great sound and are not to overkill.

the ones saying stock... go to a different thread you are not needed in here at all.

I scored a used TRD cat back about 1 year ago for $100. Would have never done it any other way imo.
Really liked this option as it was an OEM component and did not make the truck loud or drone. Modified the sound in a nice mild way

leave it stock or get a TRD cat back. I picked up an almost new TRD system a few years back for $150 & a 40 min drive.

I have an el-cheapo MBRP exhaust on mine and it sounds surprisingly good—and I mean good for the always-gonna-sound-like-ass 1GR-FE, but I like it.
