I don't know if they are. Ron popiel passed away years ago, God rest his sole. He was an innovator that sold great products at reasonable prices.

:pccoffee:  :rain: sixtys/wannabes/bunny ear eaters. We're looking at a soggy start to April here. A friend spent the weekend with us on his way south from VT to NC; he left in rain but will hopefully be out of it before long. It's funny how quiet the place seems now even though he was just here for 2 days.

A few months ago I asked this august company about their experiences with cataract surgery replacement lenses. Around here they try to upsell you with multi-focal lenses that you have to pay for out of pocket because insurance won't cover them. I wasn't a candidate because of glaucoma, but my wife did qualify, and we were looking for opinions and personal experiences from folks who had opted for the fancy ones. Well now I have a data point to share with y'all. My wife sprang for the multi-focals. It's been about six weeks since the last one went in. It's a mixed bag. In most normal daily circumstances she no longer wears glasses, hooray! That was the whole point after all. But if she is going to read for any length of time she dons a pair of drug store readers. And her distance vision isn't really good enough for her to feel comfortable driving any distance, so she's getting a pair of "driving glasses" made. The icing on the cake is that the multi-focal lenses cause the wearer to see halos, rings, and other stuff around lights -- ANY lights, not just car headlights. She looks at a little electric candle, poof -- it has a ring around it that never used to be be there. She says it is lessening but thinks it's really more that she's just getting used to it.

In fairness the surgeon did warn about the light effect, in fact she said she would not use them if the person was, say, a truck driver or similar who was on the road a lot. And Carol tests a whole lot better on the eye exams without glasses than she used to with them. But at the end of the day she still needs to wear glasses for several different purposes, and she has to get used to the crazy rings and whatnot around every light bulb on earth. I on the other hand still need glasses to read, but not to drive. Night driving also got markedly easier and better for me post cataract surgery. With all this behind us now, if I were asked my advice about the multi-focal lenses, my answer would be "save your money." Just my opinion, YMMV, yada yada.

10 years ago today (on April fools day) I gave my notice of retirement. I started the letter by stating that this was not an April fools joke. I ran a large division for a fortune 500 company and knew it would take some time to find someone to take over the reins. I gave them 6 months notice. Even though I kept pushing them , as my retirement date neared they had not put much effort in finding a candidate. I left on the date I said I would and 2 days later my wife and I were on a long relaxing New England cruise seeing the fall colors. When I returned they pleaded with me to come back as a consultant for a few months at an unbelievable huge salary. I had been a corporate vp and made a pretty nice salary. But this salary was almost double plus expenses. I said no. The stress of the job had completely burned me out. Over the next month they made 2 more sweet offers to me. I told them sorry I’m done. I’ve never looked back. Retirement is my current job and I work hard at it.
Regarding cataract surgery and lens I had cataract surgery a few years ago. I went with monofocal lens. So my vision is 20/20 distance but I need glasses for reading and close up. 80% or more of my life is using distance vision - driving, watch tv, hunting, fishing, walking, gardening and on and on and on. I love doing all those things without glasses. I keep cheap reading glasses that I buy at Costco stashed all over, every room in the house, the garage, the boat, the vehicles and of course a pair on me. Don’t miss having to wear glasses for distance and don’t mind wearing them for close up.

That was an awesome read. Sometimes its not about the money. Today I took some steps to be in a better position for me to retire. I paid off a loan on my motorcycle and financed a used truck that I'll be able to pay off in 2 to 3 years. I have plans to retire in 3.4 years so this will eliminate any debt I'll have except my house and that won't be much. It feels pretty good, it was wise decisions. I can't wait to be retired and hopefully just get to enjoy life as others here are. I'll play in my wood shop, ride my motorcycle, and do some fishing. I might work part time just for some fun money but only a couple days a week. Companies here are always looking for part time drivers. But I'll take some time off to decompress from the rat race first.

You are on the right track Greg. Get everything paid off before you retire. And if at all possible pay off your home. It’s a good feeling not to owe on things. Make a financial plan for your retirement. Also make a social plan or a to do plan. Plan all the things you want to do and like to do ie. fishing, travel, gardening, volunteer work, wood working etc. etc. etc. And then when you retire get busy. Don’t put off things you want to do. No one when they get to the end of their life ever says, I wish I would have done less. Every single person has regrets of the things they didn’t do. All wish they would have done more. So when you retire don’t put things off that you want to do, just go out and do it. As the author Hunter S Thompson said -
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!”

We've had out solar panels for now close to 9 years. Glad we were able to take that option. My zip code (92131) has some of the highest number of solar panel installs
in San Diego. No fan of SDGE. We have Tesla Solar Panels (16 panels) Looking at adding a Tesla Powerwall battery.

Awesome info on the cataract surgery lens replacements. Much appreciated since I'll probably be getting mine done in the next year or so.

My friend had this extra special lens and he is also disappointed.
I’m not sure if we had that conversation or not. He did it cause he is a little vain in his appearance I think and doesn’t want to appear old. Lol. The good news is you both are better. That’s what’s most important..

When I retired I absolutely hated my job. I wrote about it here 3 years ago this month.
They also asked me to come back a few times.
I told them they couldn’t afford me. They asked me what it would take.
I gave them a list. They almost considered it.
    3 times my salary
    I never lift a wrench
    No paperwork.
All I would do is walk around, act like a big shot, lol, and assist with jobs.
    4 hours a day. 3 days a week.
My own hours subject to change without notice.
If I show up, I show up.
I shot for the moon and almost hit it.. ROFLMAO…
The way it is now is a disgrace to my morals.
    Glad it didn’t happen.
    So much happier now.
