    Hi!

The engine in my 2005 Tacoma (1GR-FE) overheated and warped the cylinders/burnt up the pistons.

I’m unsure of what to do, is it bad enough that I need a new engine or a rebuild? Or can I just repair the motor I have?

thanks, hopefully the picture is good enough

That just looks like the usual carbon deposits on top of the pistons.

Did the motor seize up? Was it knocking?

How do you know there’s an issue with the block and pistons
The pistons look to have a normal amount of carbon buildup

heads can warp if overheated because aluminum. You can check with a straight edge. you can also check the block that way. Some machining may be needed.

Pistons can be replaced. I read the liners are separate and iron so maybe they can be replaced too.

used motor is an option but that’s up to you and sometimes junkyard motor history is not known.

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
Without measuring everything, there is no way to tell.

When measured we were .020 over the standard size for the cylinder

    The cylinders can be resleeved.
Whether it’s worth it to you or not, I don’t know.

Buy a newer complete low mileage motor from a salvage yard,a 2005 truck is really to old to dump a brand new rebuild in it.

OP, sorry to hear of this.

Do you suppose you could detail the circumstances of the overheat and how long it ran that way until the engine was shut off? If you have access to a Tech Stream it may have recorded the max temp.

I don’t have access to a temp stream unfortunately.
