so my wife and i went to the auto show today. they hyped it up to be the largest auto show ever in denver, but i dont think it lived up to its hype.

anyway, jeep had a "jeep run" which was an obstacle course that they gave the public rides on. it was kind of cool to show off the capabilities and traction control of the jeep, but after watching it a bit, i was thinking that i have been on much more difficult trails with my tacoma than what they were demonstrating on this course. i know a couple of trails that i have done that would have banged up these jeeps.

the obstacles that they were going over had lots of traction and were relatively smooth so the jeeps went over them with ease. if they wanted to impress me, i would like to see the "traction" obstacle covered in water or sand and have simulated ruts and rocks on the ramp. the "ground clearance" obstacle should have had 9-12 inch height differences instead of 1-5 inch differences. the "suspension" obstacle should have been more like a stair climb than rolling over a line of 4 inch diameter logs.

here are some pics and a video.

GMC had their 2500 HD off road concept truck there. i think it looks pretty tough. it has the 6.6 liter diesel, 35x12.5/20 tires, long travel suspension, big rear disc brakes, 17000+lb towing, and more. i was talking to the sales lady and she was saying that the designers were not trying to compete with the ford raptor. she also agreed that few people would actually purchase this truck to go offroad (who would want to bang up a $60-$70k truck?). but if people would not take it off road, then why have the long travel suspension and 35x12.5 tires? she chuckled and agreed :) we agreed its more of a status symbol, but i think it looks bad ass. (Ohh, and this truck is 20 feet long... which means that you could not have driven it into the parking garage at the denver convention center because its too long :) )

    Boss 302.

Honda ridgeline. heh... my wife actually liked it. its versatility is pretty good (storage, accessability, etc), but its definately not as capable as the tacoma is off road.
