how many miles? A few things can cause this and none of them are good. Worn out synchronizers, worn pilot bearing or worn gears...
But there is always the chance something is interfering with the gear shift keeping it from fully engaging in second gear. Make sure there isn't

It is fully engaged as it does not pop out on acceleration

Basics. Tires, painted headlighes, UHLM, baby winch in the bed, and heated mirrors :)
First course of action would be draining the transmission and looking for any glitter or metal chunks in the oil. if so, there's your problem. you'll have to take apart the gearbox and inspect it to find the damage. If not, give it a fill of fresh quality gear oil and see if the problem persists.

Are you hearing any sounds? Whining, grinding, clattering, anything? Feeling any looseness or vibration in the stick?

As said above, take the shift boot off and see if theres anything visibly wrong with or blocking the shifter. You may think it's engaging 2nd all the way but maybe its not, and pops back out after the trans gets unloaded as you decelerate. Might be something unseen under the console or near the bushing that's preventing it from fully locking in.

Do you have a body lift at all? I had an 86 the previous owner put a body lift on. I had to change the shift boot ( the rubber boot around the stick) IIRC. Would pop out occasionally binding on the old boot.

why not start with what’s easiest and cheapest before condemning and assuming worst case scenario

for example replaceable ball cup at the shifter that wears.
