Hi Guys , i went off-road for the first time in my 24 tacoma sr5 and half way through the trail in some inclines my truck lost power and a message came on saying transmission oil temp to high. so i slowly made my way to the side of the trail and let it cool down for 10 mins and proceeded to only it happen again shortly after. What is going on? Any help would be great. It’s still under warranty so i will be taking it in .

    Assuming this is real:
Sounds like your transmission is overheating.

What kind of incline are we talking? And I'm assuming it's a sustained incline? Either way, using the gear limiter (S mode, or whatever it's called in the 4th gen) to hold a lower gear helps a lot. If this is happening in 1st, then you might need to be in low range.

I'd highly recommend buying a Scangauge or Ultragauge, or similar scanner to monitor transmission temps in real time. Then you can avoid overheating in the future.

And good luck with the warranty department.

If he was on a really steep incline and at high altitude it’s normal for any gen you need to keep it in 4low op to lock the converter and to keep the transmission temps low

assuming he’s in the conditions i described it would happen to any automatic including Tacoma gen 1 thru 3 and Im not a fan of the 4rh gen at all

also if you do get the high temp warning you most likely already burned the fluid the light comes on when the temps are extremely high and you want to leave it in park and the truck running to cool it down

I went with a 3rd gen tacoma and 5th gen 4 runner and they were fine. However they did mention they were in 4lo. I guess we will see what the Dealership says about this. Thanks for the reply.

As a comparison, I've seen a big difference in temps just from downshifting from 2 to 1, since the torque converter isn't under as much stress. So dropping to 4 low would be an even bigger change.

I will have to do the same trail in 4lo to see if that’s it.

    Yeah.
If you are doing a sustained steep climb at a slow speed, it is always best to use 4LO. It's much easier on the truck. Sounds like the people you were with thought it wise to switch to LO.

    Welcome aboard!

Sorry to hear about the overheating. If you don’t get the answers you need in this thread, try posting in the “4th gen Tacomas” section. Good luck!
