Why do you need new ones?

How many miles on what you have?

    Define 'better'.

Better as in more reliable or a 6 speed with a smaller 1st gear. That OEM transmission is super reliable. Or a transfer case you guys recommend I'm pretty happy with the stock, just looking around.

I have 290k on my R150F and transfer case ('03 Tacoma). I have a good friend who's got 630k on his '96. Both trucks have spent much of their time off-road.

Seems like a ton of money to blow for a lower first gear.

I think the actual question here is: what exactly is leaking that requires the whole transmission to be replaced?

There aren't really "better" options for these trucks, unless you happen to have an auto, and want to convert to a manual transmission. But even then, the "gold standard" is mostly OEM with possibly a fancy marlin crawler part here or there. Other than auto to manual, there's not a bullet proof transmission from another model or make that you could just throw in there without extensive custom work. Even then, you have to do like-for-like as much as possible. If you have a 3.4l auto 4wd, you need donor parts from a 3.4l manual 4wd of roughly the same year.

Your best course of action is to determine if you actually need a complete new transmission or not. A slow leak from something like the pan, or one rear output seals (on the xfer case) is not a valid reason to replace the transmission.

Unfortunately many shops rather swap in a replacement as they don't wanna touch the high milage transmissions.

Random stuff. Oh! and converted to non ADD 4x4.
New record. A Friday post on Monday. Jokes aside, these transmissions and transfer cases will outlast the truck if properly maintained. Leaks can be easily addressed by seal replacement or etc. happy Monday folks!

I agree with everyone else saying you should find out what's actually wrong with your existing trans before you go shopping for a new one, but if you're determined to make things more complicated...

Why not try for an R151 swap to get lower 1st and 2nd gear? https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/question-about-toyota-r151f-transmissions.1265506/

Be sure to write about it if you try. I have no idea if it will actually work but it sounds entertaining.

I bought a near 300k r150 for a manual swap, put another 50k on it mainly floating gears, which I wasn’t very good at in the beginning, and it still drives like the day it left the factory

just fix the leak and drive it, most mechanic shops you go to employ morons to save money, it’s why your transmission is leaking again
