The engine was warm when I worked on it yesterday. Sat for 20 minutes after driving. Didn't help. I have everything in route to get this thing off later this week. Wish me luck. A bit ridiculous...

It will come off easier when engine is COLD
The poly/plastic filter canister expands at a faster rate than the aluminum boss casting

That makes sense. Shrinkage...lol. A lot of contradictory advice on this thread. Thank you.

    Shrinkage……

I switched to the alloy Toyota canister. It installs and removes MUCH easier.

O-ring does the sealing on this filters, extra torque is not needed. Not looking to doing oil change on my Taco, after the last oil change by the dealer. But they all over do.

I switched wife's RAV to Toyota's OEM aluminum canister, and will change Taco's canister at the next oil change. Helps that both cars use the same filter element, and I buy filters in cases of 10 from the dealer. Comes out to $4-ish a filter.

Please post the part number for the alloy version made by Toyota.
Not interested in the aftermarket types.

If you can F-up a plastic filter housing, you can really F-up a metal one.

Equipment solutions to operator problems are nearly always going to be suboptimal.

Need to reuse the metal filter drain plug from the plastic housing in either case.

Edit, do not know why BAM wholesale was replaced with ****** in the second link.

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
When it's that far off being properly tightened, I honestly don't think cold or warm will matter much based on others on this forum who went through a similar thing. Either way, good thing you have a replacement on the way. Plastic will be toast after you get through with it. Good luck man. This is definitely a 2-3 beer job.

Steady even pressure and make sure your in a good leverage spot .
    It will come off
The plastic housing is fine if tightened correctly

    We also have a 2016 RAV4.
Q: is the part number the same for both of yours?

The first page of any thread sheds light on any topic…this one being near/dear to my heart because I’ve done the oil change myself and see no difficulty in completing this task.

Yes, same. Ours is a 2014 RAV4. Toyota uses the same housing even for taller filters, just changes the center tube to the taller one. In our case it was a direct fit, since both Taco and Rav use the same smaller filter.

Did my first OC - with the old fashioned oil filter wrench with no problems but I did notice it didn't fit exactly correctly and seemed stuck although I could wiggle it a bit to get it off. The Motivx wrench looks like a better tool so I think I will get one. But my question is about the filter drain on the bottom of the oil filter housing. That is a first for me - what is it's purpose ? And can I just remove the filter housing and empty it and replace the filter without taking that little plug on the bottom off before taking the housing off to replace the filter - it's a PITA since I have a skid plate with an access put it is not all that big.
