I also have the TRD skid plate so I bought this kit that includes the drain plug tool.

So I really don't need to
But is it really necessary to drain the housing/filter before removing the housing? What is the purpose ? In all my vehicles in the past I just simply remove the filter or housing which contains the filter. Is this just a convenience as someone said to eliminate spillage? It is just an added step that seems unnecessary to me.

No, but there is o-ring there that may need to be replaced once in a while.

I never touch the bottom plate/seal. Just be aware of it and it may need to be replaced every so often..

if you have a place, there you go. If not, find one. Flat ground.

harbor freight parking lot is probably no problem. Saw a guy changing springs there.

If it’s done right. Clean. Oil caught in a pan. Maybe lay a moving blanket on the floor to roll around on. Shouldn’t be an issue.

If you post your location someone can help. Every place has locals. If you even need it. Just don’t get your phone dirty looking at tutorials.

Purchased Toyota Certified, with Vijay bumpers, additional lights, and Falken Wildpeaks on Fuel rims. Prev owner apparently painted the grill.
Sir, if nipples are involved, I'm going to take my time.

Finally....I removed the oil filter housing and replaced it with the OEM aluminum one with a fresh OEM filter and gaskets. Here is a pic of my suspected unchanged oil filter. I've added 300 miles since my last stealership free oil change.

Are you saying this filter supposedly has only 300 miles on it? Glad you were able to get it loose and changed out!

Absolutely! I don't see any way that filter has 300 miles on it. It looks like the filter media is starting to break down to me.

If I had to guess the filter I removed today has 15 - 20k miles on it. That's about how long I've had the TRD skid on.

You make me want to check my filter. I know 1st one was done, because clowns lost a screw for the access door, I would not be surprised if 2nd dealer did change the filter at all.

Plus side....no more scheduling a "free" half ass oil change that consumes 2 days of my time. Drop off day before, catch a ride home, catch a ride back next day and then doubt it was done correctly. My doubts are confirmed. Fool me once! DIY for the W!

I got suspicious of this and used a paint marker on the inside of my tires to number them.

Went in for an oil change and rotation. Checked after. Tires weren't rotated. I bitched in their feedback survey they sent me. A manager calls me to follow up and says they reviewed video, which confirmed my tires WERE rotated. I told them I numbered them and this is not true. They said I must be mistaken.

Not sure why they even bothered calling just to lie and then try to gaslight me.

when i questioned if they rotated tires, they emailed me a video showing they did it. i recognized my truck and saw guy do it. ask to get the video emailed to you. or you can go in to see it if they claim that is too technologically advanced.

In my case there was no question about it - front driver was marked #1, front passenger was marked #2, rear passenger was marked #3, and rear driver was marked #4. I got the truck back with the same numbers in the same positions.

I told them about the markings after they lied. They never offered to show me the video and I never demanded it because I already knew regardless.

It was months ago now and was my last "free" Toyota Care service, so it wasn't worth the effort to push the issue and potentially be offered free services that they would continue to not actually perform.

I'm just changing my own oil and rotating my own tires going forward so I know it's done right and/or at all.

See now, I have always been a DIY regular maintenance guy, but I just recently bought my 2023 and it came with some free dealer service intervals. I was thinking, "Hey, I might as well let a dealer do this stuff now that its free,", but its threads like this that make me heavily reconsider that.

And by heavily reconsider, I mean I will continue doing my own regular service work on my own.
