Can someone tell me if a 16x8" custom rim can replace the factory, steel oem 16x7"? I know absolutely NOTHING about wheels.
It seems I can't get a solid answer, even from 2 mechanics. What exactly will the 1 inch difference in width do?

Tire manufacturers give recommended wheel width for a given tire. It’s best to stay within spec, but you might be fine when out of spec.

Increased wheel width, everything else the same, will increase back spacing which could lead to UCA clearance issues.

I think plenty of people use 8” width wheels with success. YMMV

Without knowing the tire size, highly likely you'd be able to interchange those wheels and keep the same tires.
