Decided to check out the undercarriage of a ‘21. I was surprised to see a fair amount of rust, including this section. Is this out of the norm for a truck with 20k on the dash?

Random stuff. Oh! and converted to non ADD 4x4.
Ferrous based material rust just by exposure to oxygen, add to that your local weather conditions and you get that which is known as surface rust. See how aluminum, treated and painted parts are just fine?

    4 run, 2 don't
The rust, that's cast iron and uncoated.

Other items are galvanized, or coated, etc hence no rust.

Then others would be cast aluminum.

Not familiar with 3rd Gen vehicles, but just stating you'll have a ton of various parts all from different metals.

Spray paint, if it’s a concern to you. I touch up undercarriage paint every tire rotation. Plan on spraying Cosmoline soon.

You'll see that on any untreated chuck of iron. Including rotors and brake drums.

If you're shopping in salt world and concerned over rust, the frame is what you need to carefully inspect.
