Just got back into a Tacoma. The raptor gets 9 mpg so the logical answer was to buy a Tacoma too. Anyways, it needs shift solenoids. I don’t really see any info about these online, like how hard the repair is, any programming procedures I have to do, etc. has anyone done this job before on their Tacoma and is there anything I should know before I do it? The truck won’t shift out of 2nd.

Has it been diagnosed as bad shift solenoids?
Or is diagnosis based off a code reader?

Prev. Owner told me it’s the solenoid that controls reverse and 2nd. I’m a suspension and engine guy and don’t understand auto transmissions much so I’m Kinda blind here. He said fluid was all good and that it just won’t shift from 2nd.

Prev. Owner says it’s shift solenoid, but no idea if he had it actually diagnosed or just took the codes from it. Truck only has 100k miles so it seems premature for a failure but stuff happens.

Fix the codes in the way they appear and the truck will shift .
Do you have something to check codes ?

I do, but it’s refusing to connect to my phone right now. The truck will shift 1-2 just fine and then no more shifts after that. Interestingly when I put it in reverse it’s almost like it’s trying a little bit to go backward, but it stops after about a foot. When I put it in neutral it then tries to go forward about a foot but still extremely slowly and you can stop it my pushing against it. Kinda confused here. So yeah no reverse, no 3rd, 4th, 5th (6th)?

    Alright .
Did you check the fluid ?
This is the a750 series transmission . They do not have a 6th gear .
I think your going to need a better code reader .
Trans is in limp mode for sure .
You will need to clear the codes , then shut the truck off and re-scan

Fluid looks good. Kinda a pain to check. Did notice somewhere that someone’s cold air intake caused trans to go into limp mode, and I have one as well but still no CEL on. I’ll go get a better code reader. Just realized that the raptors tuner will work for codes. I’ll go check them.

Being it tries to pull in neutral I wonder if someone did the drain the transmission fluid instead of the engine oil, drove it until it started slipping, and it welded the forward clutch. Then they decided to get rid of it instead of fix it.

    @gearcruncher your thoughts?

    Very possible for sure .
If the codes are clear now , my guess is mechanical .
Wanted to rule out the slt solenoid and the neutral safety switch before calling the transmission bad but this is sounding mechanical .
Hope he got a good deal on the truck .
It's a little late to hit up the previous owner now .

I was going by it trying to move in neutral and seeming to lock up in reverse, those should be selected by the manual valve not electronically correct?

I suppose you could unplug the transmission connector and try it to rule out an electrical issue.

Yeah, $1200 cause of the trans issue and body isn’t great. Still a good deal for a limited v6 with 100k. Theres a $900 112k mile trans near me and I’d be fine swapping that in if this one is cooked. I’ll go out and try that mechanical shift thing. Fingers crossed it works but the truck owes me so little since I sold the lift off it that I’m ok swapping that trans.

I knew the kid and got a great deal on it so even if that’s the case I’m fine swapping the trans or rebuilding if there’s anything saveable. Kid also wasn’t the brightest so it’s entirely possible that happened. Although, it does still do the 1-2 shift perfectly fine and does the kick down when you floor it and will spin the 33s at highway speed which is a little terrifying. My last v6 Tacoma couldn’t do that with its 31s so not sure why this one has so much balls to it.

Try the manual shift test above and see if it checks out, if it does you may be lucky and just have a solenoid issue.

I wonder if it was regeared maybe and that's why it feels like it has more power, or are you coming from a 1st gen 3.4L?

I will when I get home yeah. My last Tacoma was a v6 4.0 2013 4wd but it was an access cab long bed, I guess more weight being 4wd but this 2wd Tacoma is still scary with how fast it’ll roast these tires. It’s faster than my raptor.
